Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers got contributions from someone other than Kobe Bryant and, as a result, got back in the win column. Caron Butler scored 22 points, Chris Mihm 19 and Lamar Odom chipped in 11 and 11 rebounds as the Lakers posted a 106-90 triumph over the Atlanta Hawks. Los Angeles cruised in its season opener against Denver but was hammered in Utah and then looked overmatched against the San Antonio Spurs at home on Friday. But the Lakers got contributions up and down their bench and took advantage of the lackluster defense of the Hawks. Bryant had his best shooting night, making 6-of-12 shots from the field and finished with 24 points. Butler was 10-of-14 from the field as Los Angeles shot 56 percent (37-of-66), including 6-of-12 from 3-point range. "I thought Caron gave us a lot of energy and made some quick spot shots where I thought the ball moved well," Lakers coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. Reserve Tierre Brown, who had just five points in the Lakers' first three games, had 13 and five assists in 21 minutes. Brown was in the Hawks training camp in 2003. "With six guys in double figures, we were playing together," Tomjanovich added. "I thought we had some really nice unselfish plays and that is the way we want to play." "Different guys are going to score on different nights, that is just the way we are," Mihm said. "Everyone did tonight and when that happens we are going to be hard to beat." Al Harrington scored 22 points and Antoine Walker added 20 for Atlanta, which went winless on its season-opening three-game road trip. "Kobe is a good player, but he's also got a good supporting cast," Walker said. "A lot of those guys made shots tonight. We weren't necessarily worried about stopping Kobe. We didn't want the other guys to get off tonight - and a couple of guys did." The Hawks will hope to regroup Tuesday at home against Cleveland. "We go home for our home opener with a team I think we can beat," Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. "We just go home and take it out on our home court and start feeling good about ourselves." "We have had trouble scoring at times," Walker said. "We have to have our defense create some easy buckets for us. We need to get in some passing lanes and create some steals. We need some easy baskets." Atlanta led, 21-20, with 3:25 left in the opening quarter when Bryant and Brian Cook combined for seven points in a 9-2 run that gave Los Angeles the lead for good. The Lakers led 29-25 after 12 minutes and pushed their lead to double digits by opening the second quarter with an 11-3 burst. Jumaine Jones had five points and Brown four in the spurt. "I always try to go out there and bring positive energy to the game," Brown said. "I do what the coaches tell me. It's a good team effort and I'm a team player, so whatever helps the team." The Hawks hung around and were within 47-41 following a basket by Harrington with 3:40 left in the opening half. But Butler had 10 points in a 12-4 burst that closed the half. "We were right in the game and then Caron Butler hits some threes at the end of the second quarter," Walker said. "It gets them up by 14 and gives them momentum. They stepped up tonight and that's a credit to them. Caron Butler was the dagger tonight." The Lakers, who did commit 18 turnovers, are 13-2 in their last 15 home games against the Hawks.
