Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Josh Howard added 14 and 13 as the Dallas Mavericks posted a 101-98 overtime triumph over the winless Golden State Warriors. Michael Finley chipped in 17 for the Mavericks, who improved to 4-0 for the second time in three seasons. Dallas, which started a season with four straight wins for just the third time in franchise history, won its first 14 games in 2002-03. Finley felt that the Mavericks' depth is the key to their early success. "Our main goal, (players) one through 15, is to win ballgames," Finley said. "Whether you're playing 40 minutes or 10 minutes, whenever you're on the court you're going to contribute in one way, shape or form. That's been our mind set since training camp. Teammates are willing to put their egos on the line." "Our depth got to them," said Dallas' Jason Terry, who had 12 points off the bench. "I saw it in them. They looked a little lethargic out there in the fourth quarter. We had to turn up the intensity. I'm glad we were able to." Nowitzki opened overtime with a jumper that put the Mavericks ahead, 90-88, and Dallas never surrendered the lead. In regulation, the Mavericks seemed to have the game under control, holding an 88-85 lead with 15 seconds left. Golden State worked the ball to Jason Richardson in the left corner and the Mavericks had him blanketed. But Richardson used his superior vertical leap to get off a 3-pointer, sinking the game-tying basket. With 13 seconds left, Dallas ran a play for Nowitzki at the other end but his jumper from just outside the foul line clanked off the rim as the buzzer sounded. Derek Fisher, filling in for an injured Speedy Claxton, had 23 points for Golden State. But 17 of Fisher's points came over the first two quarters and he missed all 11 of his shots after halftime. Mavericks starting center, Erick Dampier had just six points and five rebounds against his former team. "I would have liked to have had a better outing, but we won the game," Dampier said. "That's all that matters." The Warriors are 0-4 to start a season for the second time in six seasons. Golden State has dropped 21 of its last 22 games with the Mavericks, including 12 straight in Dallas. After Nowitzki opened the overtime with a jumper, he had a steal and a rebound. Terry made it 92-88 with a jumper but Golden State's Mike Dunleavy Jr. buried a 3-pointer with 3:23 to go. Finley hit two free throws 39 seconds later but again Dunleavy responded by drilling a jumper. Howard had a dunk with 2:04 to go and Terry made it 98-93 with a drive to the basket with 72 seconds left. Richardson buried another 3-pointer to get the Warriors within two points, but Terry hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining. Richardson had a jumper with two seconds to go, but Nowitzki sank a free throw a second later. Richardson got a good look at a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded but his potential game-tying shot bounced off the front of the rim. "It's basketball," Richardson said. "I had a real good look at it and it was short." Golden State used a 20-2 run to jump out to a 22-9 lead with 3:37 left in the first quarter and held a 57-44 advantage at the half. Fueled by a 15-4 run, Dallas cut Golden State's lead to 61-59 with 6:04 left in the third quarter. Nowitzki and Howard combined for 11 points in the spurt. The Mavericks have held all four opponents this season under 100 points. They accomplished that feat just 40 times last season, going 36-4 in those contests. "We can't fool ourselves," Finley said. "We know we didn't play a complete game tonight and as a result it almost cost us a loss. We got kind of lucky tonight." The Warriors shot just 38 percent (36-of-94), including 4-of-15 from the arc. Claxton was sidelined with a right thigh contusion.
