Game StoryMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers kept their undefeated record despite keeping leading scorer Ron Artest on the bench. With Artest benched under strange circumstances, Jermaine O'Neal scored 22 points in his first start of the season and the Pacers held off a furious fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves, 102-101. "(O'Neal) played a great all-around game," Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said. "He hit outside shots, was big around the basket, he rebounded well and was an important presence." Pacers officials say Artest was not hurt but was being held out of the game as a coach's decision. The enigmatic All-Star forward had averaged 24 points in Indiana's first three contests. "We had a situation develop yesterday ... that I felt compromised the integrity of the team," Carlisle said. "He's not going to play (Wednesday) night either. It's a private team matter and I'm just going to leave it at that." Indiana led by 19 points in the third quarter before Minnesota began to chip away behind Wally Szczerbiak, who scored 16 of his 20 points in the fourth period to cut the deficit to single digits. Troy Hudson, who scored 15 points, made a reverse layup with 33 seconds remaining to make it 102-101. Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley missed two tip-ins, giving Minnesota an opportunity to win. But Kevin Garnett missed a baseline turnaround jumper and Latrell Sprewell's long jumper missed at the horn. Stephen Jackson scored 21 points and Tinsley added 18 for Indiana (4-0), which has won its first three road games and is off to its best start in 15 years. Last season, the Pacers won their first seven road contests. "We showed a lot of poise and a lot of team camaraderie," Jackson said. "Free throws and defense win games. I think we played fairly well defensively and we made our free throws." Garnett scored 22 points in the first three quarters but did not score in the final period. Sprewell added 21 for the Timberwolves (2-2), who were outrebounded, 47-30. "We crashed a lot of people to the boards," Garnett said. "But it felt like we were down two or three guys." "They got so many offensive rebounds," Minnesota guard Trenton Hassell said "When you play good defense and then give a rebound up, it's kind of hard because they keep on getting second-chance shots at it. That's something we're going to have to improve on."
