Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets got back on track behind one of the biggest performances by a diminutive player in league history. Earl Boykins became the shortest player in NBA history to score 30 points in a game, tallying 32, and Carmelo Anthony added a season-high 34 as the Nuggets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 117-109 triumph over the Detroit Pistons. The 5-5 Boykins gave Denver a huge lift off the bench, making 11-of-15 shots and all eight of his free-throw attempts. His previous career high had been 28, set against the Minnesota Timberwolves on January 17, 2003. The distinction of being the shortest player to score 30 points in a game had been held by 5-7 Spud Webb, who eclipsed the plateau on four occasions during his career. "Tonight, we finally played Denver Nuggets basketball for the full 48 minutes," Boykins said. "I just wanted to help Carmelo out there. Someone had to take the pressure off of him." Anthony also had a good night from the field, making 11-of-20 shots, including 3-of-3 attempts from 3-point range. He added 9-of-10 from the line and shook off a slump that had seen him shoot 27 percent (22-of-81) from the field over his previous four games. "I'm taking responsibility for Melo tonight," said Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince. "We just can't let two guys score 30 on us." Anthony had a pair of baskets in a game-opening 6-2 spurt and the Nuggets never trailed in snapping a seven-game losing streak vs. the defending world champions. "Obviously this was a much needed win for the team," said Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik. "How we won is how we need to play. We had gotten away from who we are. I'm very proud of this team." Richard Hamilton scored 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting and rookie Carlos Delfino added a season-high 17 for the Pistons, who were without star center Ben Wallace. Detroit fell to 1-1 on its three-game road swing and lost to the Nuggets for the first time since December 20, 2000. The Nuggets had lost their last three games by a total of 55 points but came out scorching in this one. They led by eight in the first quarter and took a 55-47 advantage into the half. Detroit got within 57-53 following an 18-footer by Hamilton with 9:37 left in the third quarter. But Anthony answered with a 3-pointer and scored nine points in a 15-6 burst that gave the Nuggets control of the contest. Andre Miller had four of his 14 points in the run, which Anthony capped with two free throws with 6:28 remaining in the quarter. The Nuggets carried a 90-73 lead into the final quarter and was up 19 with 10 minutes left. But a basket by Prince ignited a 14-2 burst that got Detroit within 98-91 with 6 1/2 minutes to go. Two free throws by Prince with three minutes left sliced the Detroit deficit to 104-100, but Rodney White and Boykins had baskets 32 seconds apart to stem the tide. Anthony finished with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Denver did lose starting center Marcus Camby, who left the game late in the first half with a strained left hamstring. Kenyon Martin, the Nuggets' starting power forward also left early, getting ejected following his second technical with 41 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
