Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- With a difficult road test looming, the New York Knicks put together a complete effort for a key home win. Stephon Marbury led six players in double figures with 21 points as the Knicks started fast en route to a 110-96 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. The win came at a great time for New York, which embarks Saturday on a four-game road trip where it visits Indiana and treks through the "Texas Triangle," four teams that averaged nearly 54 wins last season and are a combined 16-7 this season. "We thought it was very important," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We didn't think it would be easy. We knew we had to come out and be totally focused. You don't want to go on the road not playing well." Despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter, Marbury finished three rebounds shy of his second career triple-double, handing out 10 assists. He scored 10 points in New York's 35-point first quarter and hit a scoop shot to beat the buzzer in the second period, staking the Knicks to a 60-48 halftime lead. "Steph is really leading us," Wilkens said. "Where he goes, we go. He's coming out focused, ready and getting guys going." Jamal Crawford scored 19 points and Mike Sweetney continued his strong play this season with 14 and nine rebounds. Tim Thomas, who shot 9-of-30 from the floor through his first three games, was 6-of-8 vs. the Clippers. He scored five points during New York's opening 13-2 run, capping it with his only 3-pointer of the game. "I always had confidence in my ability," Thomas said. "Sometimes the lid is closed but it's not going to stop me from shooting." "Tim has been very focused," said Wilkens, who drew up the game's first play for the 6-10 forward, culminating in a made 20-footer. "I let him know that we need him out there. I want him to be patient. I want him to come out ready. Tonight, he showed the Tim Thomas that we want to see." The win put the Knicks at .500 for the first time since December 2001 and comes six days after an embarrassing 34-point loss to the Boston Celtics in their home opener. It was a turbulent week for New York, which saw assistant coach Dick Helm resign following the loss. "I think we needed it," Crawford said. "I think it helps (our confidence). It helps with our team and gives them (the fans) something to cheer for. We're showing them what we're really made of." The Knicks shot 50 percent (39-of-78), including 6-of-11 from the arc. They also effectively moved the ball and played solid defense, collecting 23 assists while recording 12 steals. After Los Angeles got within 70-61 at the 5:49 mark of the third period, New York gradually pulled away and reached 100 points for the first time this season when Crawford hit a 17-foot banker with 8:05 left. On Wednesday, the Clippers dealt Indiana its worst home loss in franchise history, 102-68. But they never led in this one, failing to overcome 13 first-half turnovers. Los Angeles missed out on a chance to start 4-2 for the first time in eight years. Corey Maggette celebrated his 25th birthday with a strong effort, scoring 29 points. Chris Wilcox and Elton Brand added 21 and 20, respectively. The Clippers missed all three of their 3-pointers and committed 21 turnovers. "We didn't do anything right tonight," Maggette said. "We had a chance but we just turned the ball over too much. The turnovers really killed us tonight."
