Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- After losing their first four games, the Memphis Grizzlies powered their way to a second consecutive win. Pau Gasol spearheaded a balanced attack with 14 points and 11 rebounds as the Grizzlies eased to a 96-67 triumph over the winless Golden State Warriors. The Warriors had no answers for Memphis' punishing attack near the basket, getting outscored 56-28 in the paint. The Grizzlies also blocked a club-record 17 shots, five by Gasol. "That's what we're doing well," Gasol said. "We're attacking the middle, getting to the rim, and we're not settling. That's the key. That's how we're going to win games." The Grizzlies routed the Los Angeles Lakers by 23 on Wednesday, before Friday's 29-point triumph. The game was decided in the second quarter, when Memphis outscored Golden State, 21-5, during the final 6:13 of the period for a 51-32 lead. Reserve forward Mike Miller scored six of his 10 points during the run. "Mike had a great night," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "(Mike) gave us a tremendous shot in the arm in the first half. ... He's running the lanes and getting to the basket very well." Jason Williams added five points in the outburst, finishing with 12 and five assists in just 22 minutes as Memphis' starters sat most of the fourth quarter. Golden State was not able to make a dent in its 19-point halfime deficit as it again was undone again by poor shooting. The Warriors (0-6) shot a meager 27.5 percent (25-of-91) from the field and have failed to reach 40 percent in any game. "I think our confidence level is just down right now." Warriors guard Jason Richardson said. "We have to just continue to shoot the ball. That's all you can really do." The starting backcourt of Richardson and Derek Fisher was indicative of the team's woes, combining to shoot 2-of-21. "It's not just one guy, it's our whole group." Richardson said. "Confidence is just down all around, and what we have to do is just play through it. Eventually it has to get turned around." Eduardo Najera scored 16 points off the bench and Troy Murphy added 15 and 12 rebounds for the Warriors, whose worst start was 0-9 in the 1997-98 season. As for the Grizzlies, five players reached double figures in scoring as the team shot 46.9 percent (38-of-81). "With everyone clicking, we are going to be a handful," Brown said. "We are making excellent decisions and it is fun out there." Memphis forward James Posey was placed on the injured list before the game for a left foot sprain. Second-year forward Ryan Humphrey was activated.
