Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jermaine O'Neal's solid play helped the Indiana Pacers end a rocky week on a positive note. O'Neal had 33 points and 12 rebounds as the Pacers snapped a two-game slide with a 103-97 victory over the New York Knicks. Playing their fourth game in five nights, the Pacers (5-2) put behind them the worst home loss in franchise history Wednesday and a discouraging overtime setback Friday in Philadelphia. They reached 100 points for the sixth time in seven outings. "Jermaine was phenomenal," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's done a good job getting his body back. He's making great strides. He's a guy that has a lot of heart out there." Coming off a career-high 39 points Friday, O'Neal scored 12 points in the first quarter as Indiana shot 67 percent (12-of-18) from the field and opened a 37-32 lead. The Pacers opened the second period with a 14-2 run. "You can't give up 37 points in the first quarter of any game," Knicks forward Penny Hardaway said. "Whenever you do that, you can guarantee it's going to be a long game." Indiana's Ron Artest, benched for two games earlier this week for "compromising the integrity of the team," celebrated his 25th birthday by scoring 22 points. Stephen Jackson added 19 points. "This was no different than any other week," Artest said. "I feel good now and was a little tired toward the end. But I am ready, will always be ready and want to play as much as I can." Stephon Marbury scored a season-high 37 points and helped New York cut the deficit to 94-89 with 47 seconds remaining. "We wanted him (Marbury) to get to the basket at the end of the game," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "I knew they would be careful about fouling him. If we had folded, I would have been mad. But we got back in there and made some defensive adjustments." "We have to play until the buzzer goes off," Jackson said. "When we get a big lead, we end up watching the clock too much. We have to learn to close out and finish a game because that's what all the good teams do." Nazr Mohammed added 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Knicks, who have lost 10 of their last 11 visits to Conseco Fieldhouse. "If we had come out strong at the beginning of the game, (it) would have changed the outcome," Mohammed said.
