Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The returns of Ben Wallace and Larry Brown enabled the Detroit Pistons to get back on track. Wallace returned from a nine-day absence and made his presence felt inside while Brown guided the team for the first time since the season opener as the Pistons posted a 93-85 triumph over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Wallace missed Detroit's last two contests following the death of his brother, and the Pistons dropped both games. He had seven points - including a key three-point play in the final minute - 10 rebounds and three blocks in helping the Pistons improve to 3-0 at home this season. "My legs were a little bit fresher," Wallace said. "That's usually the way we play D, and we have to get back playing that way night in, night out." Brown coached the team for the first time since opening night, when the squad celebrated its 2004 NBA title. Brown underwent left hip surgery the next day and had been sidelined ever since. In picking up his 937th career victory - one shy of Hall of Famer Red Auerbach for fifth place on the all-time list - a limping Brown clearly was hampered by the procedure but managed to get Detroit's mini-slide turned around. "(Pistons president Joe Dumars) told me I was the first coach to ever be a game-time decision," Brown said. "I was tired. I felt like I played." Benefiting from Wallace's presence in the middle, Tayshaun Prince had a season-high 19 points while guards Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups combined for 45. Billups had missed the last game with a sprained ankle. "We played how we play, we played good defense, took stuff away from them and when we did, we got good shots," said Billups, who surpassed 6,000 points for his career. "That's Pistons basketball." Kevin Garnett led Minnesota with 24 points and 13 rebounds but also committed six turnovers. The Timberwolves had won two straight but fell to 1-1 during a stretch in which they play seven times in 10 days. "We just didn't execute when we needed," Timberwolves guard Sam Cassell said. "We had shots that we missed and I think they beat us practically to every loose ball, so that's the outcome of the game right there." The Pistons finished the third quarter with a 7-0 run that opened a 74-63 lead. Minnesota coach Flip Saunders was hit with a technical foul between periods, and Hamilton made the ensuing free throw. The Timberwolves got back in the contest with nine straight points, capped by Eddie Griffin's jumper with 9:41 to go. But a basket by Rasheed Wallace stemmed the tide. The lead was 87-82 with 48 seconds to go when Ben Wallace sealed the contest with a three-point play. Minnesota missed 10 of 15 3-pointers and committed 17 turnovers. Cassell and Michael Olowokandi each had more fouls than points.
