Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Antawn Jamison and the Washington Wizards barely played defense in the third quarter against the Boston Celtics. They more than made up for it in the fourth quarter and overtime. Jamison collected 27 points and 10 rebounds as the Wizards rallied from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Celtics in overtime, 110-105. "Other than a bad third quarter, we did a good job tonight," Jamison said. "We did a good job in the first quarter, in the fourth quarter and in overtime. After that third quarter, we found our composure and found a way to get it done." Recent versions of the Wizards likely would have packed it in down the stretch. "We don't feel like we are the same old Wizards," said guard Larry Hughes, who had 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. "We feel like we can slow it down, get our composure, get some buckets and come out on top." Gilbert Arenas added 25 points for the Wizards, who held a 13-point lead at the break but gave up 42 third-quarter points to fall behind, 84-72, entering the final period. "It was a rough third quarter for us," Arenas said. "Everything we did, they countered. (Paul) Pierce was great and we did everything wrong. We were playing right into their hands but we kept our cool and we were able to send the game into overtime. Then we buckled down and got some stops." Washington stormed back, taking a 93-91 lead on a 3-pointer by Jarvis Hayes with 5:50 remaining. The Wizards held a 98-95 edge before Pierce nailed a 3-pointer with 1:59 to play. Hughes made a runner in the lane 12 seconds later before Pierce countered with a pair of free throws with 58 seconds left. After a series of fruitless possessions, Pierce badly missed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer, sending the game into overtime. "I wanted to get it a little closer to the basket but I saw help defense and I started too late getting into my move and it kind of took me out of where I wanted to shoot the ball," said Pierce, who finished with 37 points and eight rebounds. "I just missed the shot. That's part of the game. "It was a good game. They had a big lead and then we came back and got a big lead. We just have to do a better job. This is what we've been preaching since the beginning of the season, keeping our composure and staying in our offense when we have the lead in the fourth quarter. I think we've had the lead in the fourth quarter just about every game we've played this year and that's a weakness right now. We have to become a tougher team in crunch time." Jamison opened the scoring in the extra period on a jumper with 3:38 to play, and Washington led thereafter. The edge was 106-100 before Boston finally scored on an alley-oop dunk by Ricky Davis with 12 seconds left. Pierce contributed had 37 points and eight rebounds for the Celtics, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. "We want a track meet if we can get it but it's tough to have a track meet when they have the baton the whole game," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought it was a relay. They kept passing it to each other, shooting it and getting another one. They're a long team and we knew that coming in." Forward Jared Jeffries had a career-high 15 points and seven rebounds in his first start of the season for Washington. He also drew a timely charge on Pierce in overtime.
