Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Dwyane Wade made his free throws when it counted most, then made sure that it didn't go to waste in overtime. Wade scored 23 of his career-high 39 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, including the game-winning shot at the buzzer, as the Miami Heat posted a thrilling 107-105 victory over the Utah Jazz. The Heat had made just 44 percent (16-of-36) of their free throws until Wade made two with one second remaining to tie the score, 90-90, and send the game into overtime. "Those were actually tougher than the shot at the end because you're feeling to pressure to make both or you lose the game," Wade said. Miami opened a 101-95 lead with just over two minutes to play in the extra period before Carlos Arroyo made four free throws to draw Utah within two with 1:19 left. After two free throws by Wade, Carlos Boozer converted a layup and Arroyo made two more from the line to make it 105-105 with 4.5 seconds on the clock. That set the stage for Wade, whose jumper from the top of the key rattled around the rim before falling through as time expired. "I watched the ball play with my emotions before it finally rolled in. It seemed like forever," Wade said. "I had a lot of confidence and knew I was going to get the last shot, and it was up to me to make it happen." "We gave him the ball and he went to work," Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said. "That's just a quality shot from a quality player." Utah coach Jerry Sloan said the right player had the ball for the Heat with the game on the line. "Wade is a great player and whoever guards him is going to have to try and stay in front of him," Sloan said. "The kid stepped up and made a great shot. That is what great players do." Arroyo made all 12 of his free throws - including 10 in the final minute of regulation and overtime - and scored 18 while Boozer added 25 and grabbed nine rebounds for the Jazz, who lost despite outrebounding the Heat, 52-41. "I stepped up when it counted, but unfortunately it didn't result in a win," Arroyo said. "We needed to score and we found it at the free-throw line. That's what kept us in the game." Utah fell to 5-1 when outrebounding its opponent. The Heat made up for their poor rebounding by committing just eight turnovers in 53 minutes. "That really jumped out a me," Van Gundy said. "You keep those down and you give yourself a shot." Shaquille O'Neal had 22 points and 11 rebounds but was just 2-of-10 from the line before fouling out with just over a minute to go in overtime. "That was just a great shot by (Wade) at the end," O'Neal said. "He told me during the timeout that he was going to get it done and he did." Miami made six of its final eight from the line but still sank just 50 percent (22-of-44) from the stripe. "Ouch," said guard Eddie Jones, whose 3-pointer with 3:27 left in the fourth quarter gave the Heat their first lead, 79-77, since the first quarter. "But you know what? You have those nights. We still won the game." Jones just shook his head over Wade's heroics. "He's just an incredible player who keeps making incredible shots," Jones said. "He's lights-out in that situation, literally."
