Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse made a layup along the right baseline with 55 seconds left to lift the Dallas Mavericks to a 103-101 victory over the New York Knicks. Dallas held an 83-73 lead in the fourth quarter before the Knicks put together a late comeback. Stephon Marbury scored 18 of his 24 points in the final period, including a three-point play with 1:49 left that tied it, 97-97. "At the end of the game, everyone plays different," Marbury said. "I'm just trying to make sure everyone is in the groove because it's hard when you're the one that's going from the beginning of the game." Marquis Daniels answered with a basket to put the Mavericks back on top. Penny Hardaway split two free throws for the Knicks before Stackhouse scored to give Dallas a 101-98 edge. Dirk Nowitzki, who led Dallas with 30 points and 12 rebounds, made two free throws for a 103-98 lead. Marbury made three foul shots with 21 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 103-101. The Knicks had two chances to tie the game, but Tim Thomas missed a 22-foot jumper and Jamal Crawford was short with a 35-footer at the buzzer. Crawford banked in a 3-pointer at the horn to beat Houston on Thursday. "I still feel I should have made that shot," Crawford said. "I think I had a good feel for those shots and I missed. I take that as my fault." "This is the NBA and guys are going to get good looks at the basket and find a way to get open," Daniels said. "We had a good defense set up on their last play and we got them far away from the basket." Josh Howard scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Dallas, which beat New York for the sixth consecutive time. "I just went out there and just played ball," Howard said. "I just stayed calm with my shot and tried to stay focused with all the situations I was put in." "We dodged a bullet tonight," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I was concerned because they got a little lucky in Houston last night. I thought they played a really good game on tough back-to-back." Crawford scored 26 points, including six 3-pointers, and Kurt Thomas added 16 for New York, which has lost six straight to Dallas. "I'm still very proud of this team for never quitting," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We came back. But it's tough to have to make big shots every night."
