Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Stromile Swift is making the most of his opportunities. Swift made his second start of the season a pivotal one, scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds as the Memphis Grizzlies posted a 100-87 triumph over the Golden State Warriors. With its second victory in nine days against Golden State, Memphis won for the fourth time in six games after opening the season 0-4. Swift had seen his playing time decrease steadily and logged a season-low 17 minutes against Portland on Wednesday. But he scored a season-high 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting in Friday's 107-105 loss to the Sacramento Kings. When Pau Gasol was a late scratch with a right ankle sprain, Swift got the start and was a major factor inside as Memphis held a resounding edge on the boards, 51-36. "It was big for us," Swift said. "Every win is big for us. We don't complain when a guy goes down because we feel like everybody on this team can play and we can fill in for one another and when Pau went down they told me I had to start. I just went in and tried to do my job of bringing energy and try to help this team get a win." "Stro moved into (Gasol's) position and had 20 (points) and 12 (rebounds)," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "He did a very nice job, a couple of blocks, made eight foul shots, come on, he was extremely instrumental in us winning this game. He was active. He ran Gasol's plays and the opportunities were there." Bonzi Wells scored 17 points and Mike Miller chipped in 13 for Memphis, which won for just the second time in six road games this season. "We were 2-2 on this trip and we let the Seattle and Sacramento games get away and it could have been a bonanza trip," Brown said. "But when you looked at what we were doing, 2-2 is good for us because we're ending this thing with a win and we're 4-6 which is good." Troy Murphy posted a career high with 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Warriors, who had won two of their last three contests. "It didn't do us any good," Murphy said. "I don't know how comfortable you can feel at 2-8, but we should definitely be improving on our play and we're not doing it and I don't know what the answer is. "Is it a lack of energy? We're not executing, I mean we go over the plays and we're fumbling the ball, we're throwing it to the wrong people, turning the ball over. I don't know." Golden State shot just 40 percent (32-of-80) from the field and missed 17 of its 20 3-pointers. "I think when the ball doesn't go down for us early, we get down," Golden State coach Mike Montgomery said. "We let our energy be dependent too much on the shots going in. "Memphis is a good defensive team, they take some things away from you. So we don't get to cut where we want to cut necessarily. We kind of gave into it a little bit. We've got to get through that."
