Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Ricky Davis shot as well as the Seattle SuperSonics had on their nine-game winning streak. Coming off the bench for the first time this season, Davis scored a season-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting as the Boston Celtics pulled away for a 102-83 victory over the SuperSonics. Celtics coach Doc Rivers made the switch in practice earlier Sunday, having Jiri Welsch scrimmage with the first team and Davis with the second team. He like the result and used the new lineup for the game. "I've come off the bench before," said Davis, who hit 10-of-14 shots. "It's cool. Whatever coach wants me to do, I'm going to do. It really doesn't matter. The point is for me to come in and lead the second group and have some leadership out there." Boston shot just under 57 percent (37-of-65), its third-highest mark in five years. Seattle, which was aiming for its first double-digit winning streak since the start of the 1993-94 season, had been shooting 42 percent (91-of-215) from the arc this campaign but connected on just 5-of-23 3-pointers against Boston. "They made every shot tough for us," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "They were rewarded by their hard play at both ends of the court. They beat us at the game we have had success with - small ball." Boston held just a 62-56 edge before embarking on an 18-2 run bridging the final two periods. Davis scored 10 points during the burst, which ended on a pair of free throws by rookie Al Jefferson that made it 80-58 with 11:08 remaining. Paul Pierce collected 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Celtics, who had blown fourth-quarter leads at Washington on Wednesday and vs. San Antonio on Friday. Seattle pulled within 83-74 but got no closer. "It was a good fourth quarter for us today," Pierce said. "Even when they made their little run in the fourth quarter, we were able to bounce back." Boston closed the game on a 12-2 run that included three layups. "We were able to run tonight because we were getting defensive stops," Rivers said. "Our defense tonight was absolutely unbelievable. They shot 36 percent (28-of-78) from the field. That won the game for us." Ray Allen scored 21 points to pace Seattle, which had not lost since a 114-84 thumping by the Los Angeles Clippers in its season opener.
