Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs have gotten into a habit of winning games in the fourth quarter. That was where they lost Sunday's game. The Spurs scored just nine points in the final period and blew a 19-point lead in a 96-91 loss to the Toronto Raptors, who engineered the biggest fourth-quarter comeback in franchise history. Lamond Murray scored 13 points and Rafer Alston had nine points and five assists in the fourth quarter for the Raptors, who ended a five-game slide and snapped the Spurs' six-game winning streak. "We had lost five in a row and we're down 20 at home and the fans were getting frustrated," Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said. "Hopefully a win like this at home, the way we came back to win, we can carry this on the road. In the five wins we've had, it's been a different guy every night, and that's a good thing." On Thursday and Friday, the Spurs used fourth-quarter surges to defeat Philadelphia and Boston, respectively. But after turning it on in the fourth quarter of those games, San Antonio turned it off in this one. "Obviously we cashed it in and played like the game was over," San Antonio coach Greg Popovich said. "They did a great job in the fourth quarter and took one away from us." Toronto outscored San Antonio, 33-9, in the final period with both Vince Carter and Jalen Rose on the bench. Carter scored four points and Rose eight. Toronto's previous biggest fourth-quarter comeback came in a 113-107 overtime win over Minnesota on January 24, 1998, when they erased an 18-point deficit. "We put a group on the court to see if we could get some energy," Mitchell said. "Those guys brought us back in the game and those guys earned the right to stay out on the court." Chris Bosh, who helped limit superstar Tim Duncan to just five points in the second half, added, "intensity and determination was the difference. They were beating us up. We just had to match their effort and play hard, period." With the Spurs leading, 90-89, with 1:46 left, Murray blocked a dunk by Duncan, then hit a 3-pointer from the right wing with 1:29 to play to give Toronto the lead for good. After Duncan missed a short lefthanded hook with 40 seconds remaining, Murray drained another jumper with 14 seconds to go. Murray seemed more impressed by the block than his own offense. "I'm a small forward and he's the No. 1 power forward in the game right now," he said. "Just to be in the game and get a block against a guy of that caliber is a great feeling." Alston had 20 points and 11 assists and Bosh had 20 and 10 rebounds for Toronto. Morris Peterson added a season-high 16 points off the bench for Toronto. Duncan scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for San Antonio. But he made just 8-of-19 shots and 10-of-15 free throws. "That loss, I'll put that on my shoulders," Duncan said. "I had a bunch of layups and missed some free throws. I had chances and opportunities to go up six or eight points. I give a lot of credit to them, they fought back and never really gave up."
