Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Gilbert Arenas could not wait to redeem himself after his worst performance of the season. Arenas scored 24 of his 26 points in the first three quarters to lead the Washington Wizards to a 102-86 victory over the Toronto Raptors. "It's satisfying because this is a new team and everyone is happy about us winning three in a row," Arenas said. "It's a totally different team than we had last year. It's a much older team and we want to win." Coming off a season-low seven points against the New Jersey Nets on Saturday - in which he missed all four of his shots - Arenas finished one point shy of his season-high set against the Miami Heat on November 6. "It was a good win," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "I am not going to think about three in a row. It was a big thing in the past, especially last year, because we hadn't done it and had certain opportunities to get three in a row." Raptors coach Sam Mitchell felt very differently. "We didn't put a body on nobody," Mitchell said. "We didn't move. We didn't box out. We didn't even jump and we have athletes who never got off the floor. And the ones I'm talking about, they know who they are because I've told them they need to quit. It's embarrassing. There's no excuse for us to go out and play with that kind of effort." Washington went on a 20-4 run over a 5 1/2-minute stretch of the third quarter. Larry Hughes' 3-pointer capped the burst and staked the Wizards to a 72-56 lead. Antawn Jamison scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Hughes scored 20. "Our defense was good," Jamison said. "We did a good job of making them take tough shots." Jared Jeffries had a season-high 12 rebounds and Brendan Haywood pulled down a season-high 11 as the Wizards dominated inside, holding a 64-47 rebounding edge, including a 26-13 advantage on the offensive end. Washington also had a 35-8 advantage in second-chance points. "When you look at them, they don't scare you or shock you in any way," Toronto guard Rafer Alston said. "But when you get on the floor and see how much they attack the offensive glass, it's amazing. They just keep coming at you." Toronto, losers of six of seven on the road, opened the fourth quarter with a 17-4 run that got it within 87-81 with four minutes remaining. Vince Carter scored 25 points and Alston added 20 points and a career-high 13 assists for the Raptors. Carter and Alston both offered their takes on what is wrong with the 5-7 Raptors. Carter even went so far as to agree with Mitchell's assessment. "That's all he (Mitchell) asks of us is just effort, for us to come out and play hard and just bring it," Carter said. "I guess he felt that some of the guys weren't giving him the maximum effort that he wanted and he has every right to be mad about that." "It's the little things," Alston said. "We need to stop teams from getting so many offensive rebounds and coming up with loose balls. We don't turn the ball over a lot but we need to make free throws and set screens to get guys open."
