Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki made a surprise appearance. However, his teammates disappeared around him. Nowitzki had 23 points and 11 rebounds despite a sprained ankle but got very little help as the Dallas Mavericks suffered a 94-80 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, who ended a two-game skid. Nowitzki suffered a left ankle sprain in Sunday's loss at Denver. Without their All-Star forward, the Mavericks blew a 12-point lead in an 83-82 loss to Minnesota on Monday. "I really only got to work out for the first time this morning and then it didn't swell up at all this afternoon," Nowitzki said. "So I said, 'Hey, let's get it taped up and see how it feels.' It's not 100 percent but it's the kind of pain I can play with." Expected to miss at least a week, Nowitzki returned early and gave his team a boost. He did not shoot particularly well, making just 7-of-18 shots. But he kept Dallas in the game for three quarters. "I liked some of the stuff Dirk did," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "It's only going to get better when he's at 90 or 100 percent." "I'm not surprised he played well," Spurs guard Brent Barry said. "I am surprised that he did play. We prepared as if he wasn't. We came out and I saw his blond locks flying around." The Mavericks needed someone else to step forward, but center Erick Dampier scored one point in 30 foul-plagued minutes and fellow starters Marquis Daniels and Josh Howard combined for just 13 points. "We scored 80 points and that's not enough to win against this team," Nowitzki said. "They played really good defense. Every shot seemed to be contested and we really didn't have a lot of ball movement. They have a lot of length, and we really had a hard time scoring." "When you shoot 38 percent and have eight assists, you are probably not going to win an NBA game," Nelson said. Meanwhile, the Spurs provided support for superstar Tim Duncan, who had 27 points and 13 boards. Tony Parker had 15 points and nine assists and Barry scored 12 points without missing a shot. San Antonio took the lead for good late in the second quarter and held a 74-67 bulge entering the final period. A 3-pointer by Manu Ginobili and two hoops by Barry built the lead to 81-69 with 8:35 left and Duncan took it from there, scoring nine points in the last eight minutes. Bruce Bowen scored 10 points for the Spurs, who had surrendered 33 points in the fourth quarter of a loss at Toronto on Sunday and absorbed a 93-90 loss at Memphis on Monday. San Antonio had not lost three in a row in the regular season since January 13-16. "We are a defensive team," Duncan said. "We had gotten away from that the past two games. Teams were shooting in the high 40s (percent). But we did better tonight." Nowitzki's jumper pulled Dallas into a 40-40 tie before San Antonio surged to a 49-45 halftime lead. Two buckets by Duncan and a 3-pointer by Bowen made it 56-49 early in the third period. Jerry Stackhouse scored 15 points and rookie Devin Harris added 12 for Dallas.
