Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Marko Jaric and Corey Maggette led the Los Angles Clippers to a traditional win. Jaric tied his season-high with 23 and Maggette added six of his 16 in a late second quarter run as the Clippers posted a 101-88 victory over the New Jersey Nets in the fourth consecutive Thanksgiving meeting between the teams. "We are much, much better than last year," Jaric said. "We have self-confidence and we know we can win these games. We just have to continue to play these types of games. When we want to play, I think it is very hard for any team in the NBA to beat us and we've already demonstrated that." The 6-7 Croatian point guard scored 13 points in the third quarter and finished with six assists as Los Angeles ended a three-game slide. The win has the Clippers at the .500 mark (6-6) at this juncture in the season for the first time since 1996-97. "We have a better rotation this year and the guys are playing as a team," Jaric said. "Everyone is coming to the game with the idea that they'll give themselves up for the team. That's the most important thing." Maggette and Elton Brand, who finished with 17, combined to score every point in the Clippers' 10-1 run in the final 3:02 of the first half. Los Angeles took a 48-39 lead into the break that they never relinquished in the second half. "I can say this is more of a team win," Maggette said. "We want to play hard and make the extra passes. We did a lot of good things in a game we're supposed to win. Our objective right now is to stay over .500 and make a run at the playoffs." "They made that run there in the second quarter," Nets forward Richard Jefferson said. "We went down nine or ten there and we just can't let that happen because we don't have spurt ability. We just can't go on a 13-2 run. That's not us. We can't afford to have those types of slip ups." Jefferson scored 24 for New Jersey, including 15 in the third quarter when the Nets got as close as 66-60, but they still lost for the seventh consecutive time - their longest losing streak sice the 2000-01 season. "We have shown improvement in taking care of the ball," Jefferson said. "One thing we know is that our defense is going to be there. In the end we know it is going to be our staple but tonight we just didn't have it. They did what they wanted to do and we didn't do a good job in stopping them. 88 points is enough for us to win the game." Alonzo Mourning was held to four points in just 18 minutes - his second consecutive game under 20 minutes after averaging almost 30 in his previous nine. Mourning is attempting a comeback after having a kidney transplant less than a year ago. "We were just searching for a combination," New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank said. "Just try to find things that work. We're struggling a little bit and we don't want to exhaust Alonzo. It's a long season." New Jersey received a fine effort off the bench from Travis Best and Brian Scalabrine, who combined for 26 points, after the duo scored 22 against Denver on Tuesday. "Brian has always been a big contributor since he's been here with the Nets and Travis has got a lot of nice things done," Frank said. "We're just trying to find a nice mix on the floor to help us win a game." "It's tough," Best said. "But we are a resilient team. We know we've been getting better each night and we're finding out ways to keep us in games. It's a little discouraging to put out that type of effort and not come away with a victory."
