Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Doug Christie's hard foul left the door open, but the Los Angeles Lakers were unable to walk through. The Lakers could not capitalize on Christie's flagrant foul with under a minute remaining in a 109-106 loss to the Sacramento Kings, who extended their winning streak to seven games. Still one of the NBA's better rivalries, the game was tied at 105-105 with 52 seconds remaining when Christie was called for a flagrant foul on Brian Cook, who made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Lakers the lead. Kobe Bryant, who scored 40 points, committed a turnover and Peja Stojakovic made two free throws with 35 seconds left to give the Kings the lead for good. Stojakovic scored nine of his 26 points in the fourth quarter. "I can't say I hit a lot of shots down the stretch," Stojakovic said. "I did make some free throws. It is a good win for us." Stojakovic enjoyed not seeing former Laker Shaquille O'Neal. "It is a different Laker team," Stojakovic said. "A different style of basketball. They are trying to push the basketball every time they get a rebound. They don't have the big guy that is going to dominate you in the paint." Bryant missed another 3-pointer and Stojakovic made two more foul shots, giving the Kings a 109-106 lead with six seconds left. Following a timeout, Bryant and Lamar Odom each missed from the arc. "I had a good look," Bryant said of his last 3-point try. "Bobby Jackson got under my legs a little bit and knocked me off balance." "It hurts," Odom said. "But that is life in the NBA. When you lose you have to put it behind you, practice the next day and go out and get the next one." Bryant went 11-of-17 from the field and 15-of-19 at the free throw line. Chris Webber collected 22 points and 16 rebounds for the Kings, who have gone 8-1 since opening the season with a winless trip through the "Texas Triangle." "Our season last year was so much different," Webber said. "We never had any consistency. Getting into this year we need to find an identity. We lost a big part of our puzzle Vlade (Divac)." Divac, who played six seasons for the Kings before signing with the Lakers, made just his second appearance of the season and scored two points in seven minutes. "It is easier to play with players that you are used to playing with for a long time," Divac said. "When a new team is on the floor you can easily make a lot of mistakes. And we are a young team." Cook and Chris Mihm each contributed 15 points for Los Angeles, which fell to 0-6 when allowing at least 100 points. "We just came up on the short end," Cook said. "We had a couple of opportunities and missed a shot in the end. Sacramento has been together a long time and they know how to play with each other. They played a very good game tonight."
