Game StorySEATTLE (Ticker) -- Despite Rashard Lewis' injury, Danny Fortson kept the Seattle SuperSonics on their surprising roll. Fortson came off the bench to score a season-high 20 points and grab eight rebounds as the SuperSonics never trailed in a 92-79 victory over the reeling New Jersey Nets. Lewis left with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter, suffering a strained left shoulder. The 25-year-old forward, who averages 21.5 points per game, scored just nine points on 3-of-12 shooting. "He could have come back in the game, but (trainer Mike Shimensky) told me that if we didn't need him to keep him out," Sonics coach Nate McMillan. "We were able to make a run, so we didn't take the chance." Averaging just 8.2 points a game, Fortson, led a bench that outscored its New Jersey counterparts, 47-21. Vladimir Radmanovic scored 14 points off the bench for Seattle. "Every win for us is satisfying," said Fortson, who scored 14 points in Seattle's win in New Jersey earlier this month. "We're getting better as a team and we play hard whatever the team we're playing against. We're building character everyday." "They have a lot of weapons," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "I thought Fortson, for the second straight time we played them, has been an 'X' factor defensively." The Sonics have won 12 of their last 13 games and own the NBA's best record at 12-2. They are off to their best start since opening the 1996-97 season, when they also opened the season with 12 wins in 14 games. "It's still November," McMillan said. "We're still in the first month of the season ... We can't get happy with what we are doing. ... It doesn't guarantee us anything. We still have 60 or 70 games to go." Losers of eight consecutive games, the Nets matched a franchise worst by scoring just eight points in the first quarter en route to a 48-27 halftime deficit. "It was a lack of effort," Nets forward Richard Jefferson said. "We didn't compete the way we were supposed to. We have a mixed group of individuals here that all need to learn how to trust each other and trust what the coaches are talking about." Jefferson scored 21 points and Eric Williams added 20 for New Jersey. They combined for 14 points in a 20-5 run that opened the third period and cut the deficit to 53-47 with 3:24 left. "(The surge) had nothing to do with me," Frank said. "The guys just raised it up another level. That's the way we have to play. We have to give maximum effort at all times and all people ... starting with me." But the Sonics ended the threat by outscoring the Nets, 12-2, a run highlighted by Radmanovic's 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter. Seattle guard Ray Allen struggled from the floor, making just 5-of-19 shots, but still finished with 19 points after making all but one of his nine free throws. The All-Star guard also had three steals.
