Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Mehmet Okur had a flawless shooting night to provide some redemption for the Utah Jazz. Okur made all eight shots and all four free throws for a season-high 20 points in just 25 minutes, helping the Jazz defeat the Houston Rockets, 90-80. "I felt good out there tonight," Okur said. "I think we did a good job. Our whole bench was huge tonight. I tried to bring some energy for my teammates and I think I did well tonight." "He shot the ball very well," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "He got open because he knows how to get open and he'll knock down shots." Utah picked up a much-needed victory after losing to the previously winless New Orleans Hornets and Chicago Bulls in back-to-back home games earlier this week. "We had tough losses the last two games," Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko said. "Especially against teams who didn't have a good record this season. We're happy to get back on the winning track. That's very important for us." Okur came off the bench to provide a huge spark in a pivotal second quarter. With the score tied, 35-35, he scored six points and grabbed two boards in a 13-0 run that gave Utah a 50-40 halftime lead. Okur also teamed with Kirilenko and Jarron Collins to help shut down Houston center Yao Ming, who found himself in early foul trouble and finished with just nine points and four rebounds in 26 minutes. "We were concentrating during the whole game and just paid attention defensively," Kirilenko said. "One important thing was just stopping Yao. We shut him down totally. I think Jarron Collins, Curtis (Borchardt) and Mehmet did a great job on him." Kirilenko, the league's leading shot-blocker, swatted away four more shots and posted his fourth double-double of the season, with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Houston trailed by 18 points in the third quarter before going on a 15-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by former Jazz guard Scott Padgett, that made it 72-66 early in the fourth quarter. Moments later, Jim Jackson hit his fifth 3-pointer to bring Houston to within 74-69 before Okur nailed an 18-footer that sparked a 6-0 run by Utah to put its lead back in double digits. "We dug ourselves a hole," Rockets guard Tracy McGrady said. "And trying to dig out of that hole in the fourth quarter is tough when you play here. Once we dug ourselves that hole, we did a great job fighting back. But when we made our run, those guys came right back and closed it out." The Jazz, who committed 20 turnovers against Chicago on Wednesday and scored a season-low 75 points against New Orleans on Monday, rebounded with a strong offensive showing, shooting 50 percent from the floor, with 27 assists on 36 baskets. "I thought we set more screens to try to help other people instead of thinking about ourselves," Sloan said. "We passed the ball better and I thought we executed our offense. I thought everybody was pretty much on the same page trying to do what we had to do." Jim Jackson tied his season high with 18 points and McGrady added 17 for Houston, which once again failed to get coach Jeff Van Gundy his 300th career win.
