Game StoryMEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki had too much in the second half to keep the banged-up Memphis Grizzlies winless without Hubie Brown. Nowitzki scored 32 points and grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks posted a 98-85 victory over the Grizzlies, who fell to 0-2 since coach Hubie Brown retired due to health concerns. "This was a game I thought we should win," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "We had to play a great second half to get it, but they were playing back-to-backs and with all their changes, we knew this would be a good opportunity for us." Memphis led, 58-51, at halftime. But with three of their big men out of action, the Grizzlies had no answer for the All-Star forward of the Mavericks after intermission. Nowitzki scored four points during a 17-1 run across the third and fourth quarters and added eight more in the final eight minutes as the Mavericks pulled away. "Were they banged up? Well, so were we," Nowitzki said. "We'd lost three in a row this week, so this was a big game for us. We wanted to make sure to close this week out in a good manner." "Our last two wins, he's been big for us," Nelson said. "Just his presence on the floor means they can't leave him, then their rotations get all screwed up and it creates openings for other people." Since missing Monday's loss to Minnesota due to a sprained ankle, Nowitzki is averaging 26 points and 13.3 rebounds in three games, helping his team recover from its first three-game losing streak since March. "Dirk is such a freak," Grizzlies interim coach Lionel Hollins said. "The guy is just a great player. Thirty-two points and 18 rebounds - there's no more that needs to be said about him." While their sharpshooter was heating up, Dallas did much of its damage on defense in the second half. After Mike Miller's basket with 4:20 left in the third quarter gave the Grizzlies their largest lead, 73-63, the Mavericks began their surge. Erick Dampier capped the decisive run with a dunk at the 8:51 mark of the fourth quarter for an 80-74 lead. "In the first half, we were just there," Nowitzki said. "They got whatever they wanted. We were letting them walk around and make shots from all over the place. We wanted to make sure our defense was better in the second half and that's what we did." Memphis, which was without forwards Stromile Swift and Brian Cardinal, went nearly 11 minutes without a basket until Shane Battier's jumper with 5:21 remaining. "Shots we were hitting in the first half, we couldn't make in the second half," said Memphis guard Bonzi Wells, who after shooting 4-of-6 in the first quarter went 1-of-9 the rest of the way. "In the second half, we just got a little sluggish and our shots didn't fall." The Grizzlies scored just 27 points in the second half and saw their scoring output drop in each quarter after posting 30 in the first period. Miller scored 20 points and Pau Gasol chipped in 16 and 13 rebounds for Memphis, which shot 38 percent (31-of-82) from the floor and got just 12 points from its depleted bench. The Grizzlies have lost three in a row. "We got a lot of open shots, we just couldn't make any shots," Hollins said. "Not just jump shots, but we missed layups, too."
