Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Larry Hughes came up big when the Washington Wizards needed him most. Hughes, who recorded his first triple-double of the season, poured in 21 points in the fourth quarter and the Wizards used an big spurt in overtime to knock off the Toronto Raptors, 114-109. Washington trailed by nine with just under four minutes to play but went on a 12-3 run to end regulation and tie the game, 100-100. Hughes was clutch, scoring five points in the run, including a pair of free throws with eight-tenths of a second to play. "I wasn't going to miss them," Hughes said. "I had missed a few (free throws) earlier, so with 0.8 on the clock, I was very focussed." "He won the game for us in that fourth quarter," Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas said. "He got us back and carried us into overtime and we did the rest of the job from there. He did a great job and we played off his energy." After Toronto took a 102-100 lead early in overtime, Washington went on an 8-0 run to take command. Hughes collected 33 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in 52 minutes for Washington, which won its fifth straight over Toronto. He combined with Arenas (27) and Brendan Haywood (season-high 22) to score 82 points, grab 22 rebounds and hand out 18 assists. "We didn't panic," Hughes said. "We knew we could make plays. I was just being patient, always in attack mode, but trying not to be overly aggressive." Toronto, which lost for the eighth time in its last 11 games, allowed 34 points in the fourth quarter as the game slipped away. "Anytime you have a nine-point lead with less than three minutes to go on your home court, that should be enough," Raptors forward Jalen Rose said. "So we are disappointed we let that one get away from us." The Raptors had their chances down the stretch but Vince Carter missed a jumper from the left wing as time expired in regulation and Donyell Marshall misfired on a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 8.9 seconds left in the extra session. Rose scored 29 points and Carter and Marshall added 26 and 12, respectively, for Toronto, which plays its next six games on the road against Eastern Conference opponents. "A loss is a loss - all of them hurt," Carter said. "Once again, it's another game we definitely should have won."
