Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Even without leading scorer Corey Maggette, the Los Angeles Clippers were able to complete a sweep. Elton Brand scored a season-high 25 points and Bobby Simmons added 22 to lift the Clippers to a home-and-away sweep with a 103-91 victory over the Golden State Warriors. "We're starting to click and just waiting for other guys to get healthy," said Brand, who pulled down a 13 rebounds. "Corey Maggette is out, Kerry Kittles is out, Shawn Livingston is out. Once these guys get healthy, we'll be ready. More and more weapons for us." "Right now we're playing well, we just have to stay positive," he added. "Hopefully, we'll keep on improving from there." Despite missing Maggette, who averages 18.5 points, Los Angeles rolled to its third straight win, improving to 8-6 and matching its best start through 14 games since the 1984-85 season, its first in L.A. The franchise also won eight of its first 14 games as the Buffalo Braves in 1977-78. "It was a great performance," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "What I'm most pleased about is how we've been able to move the basketball. For the most part, when our spacing is good and we're moving the ball to the open man, good things are happening to us. Right now we're in a decent flow." Assistant coach Rory White played with the Clippers from 1984-87 and sees a mental attitude change on this year's edition. "It's mental attitude right now. Our guys have a lot of confidence right now," White said. "Once you start to win, it gets contagious. It's like once you start to lose, it gets contagious too. Right now, these guys are buying into what Mike wants, and that's defense. They're playing with high energy and that's quite a difference from when I was playing." Rookie forward Quinton Ross, filling in for Maggette, had 12 points, hitting 5-of-8 shots in his first NBA start. "I just wanted to come out and not make too many mistakes and work hard," Ross said. "I just tried to help this team." "With Corey unfortunately out, we needed it tonight," said Simmons, who helped pick up the scoring slack. "Guys made plays for each other. I had to step up a little bit tonight because he was out." Simmons had 18 points as the Clippers took a 54-48 lead into the break. They blew the game open in the third quarter, hitting 13-of-19 shots while outscoring the Warriors, 29-15. Chris Wilcox added nine of his 13 points in the third for Los Angeles, which put together a 15-5 run in the period to help open an 83-63 advantage entering the fourth. "We're up by six at the half, we really wanted to open it up in the third quarter," Brand said. "When we got the opportunity, we got the separation." The Clippers' 23-point lead was sliced to 97-87 on an eight-foot runner by Cliff Robinson with 4:27 remaining. But Brand made a pair of layups around a jumper to seal the win. "It was getting a little scary there," Brand said. "We had to get some buckets, so coach put me back in the game." Mike Dunleavy Jr., the son of the Clippers' coach, scored 20 points and Jason Richardson and Troy Murphy added 17 apiece for Golden State, which absorbed its 10th loss in 13 games this season. "It just seems we're not the aggressors, we're on our heels and teams are going out on us," Warriors center Dale Davis said. "The fact of the matter is we're just not playing any defense. I don't know if our focus is wanting to play defense now." Dunleavy Jr. praised the Clippers, who improved to 3-0 this season over the Warriors. "I'm not going to toot my dad's own horn but you can tell which teams are well-coached," he said. "They're always in the right spots, they execute their plays, they force teams to their weaknesses. That's as tough team to beat." Maggette, who played just 14 minutes in Los Angeles' 98-87 win over the Warriors on Friday due to a sprained left ankle, will have an MRI performed at Daniel Freeman Hospital on Monday.
