Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce's first miss from the line came at the wrong time for the Boston Celtics. Pierce, who had made his first eight free throws, split a pair of attempts with a chance to tie the game with five seconds left as the Celtics fell to the Miami Heat, 106-104. Dwyane Wade contributed 25 points and nine assists and Shaquille O'Neal added 23 and 13 rebounds for the Heat, who had averaged just 87.7 points over their last three contests, losing two of them. O'Neal made all nine of his shots, tying a Heat record for shots made without a miss set by Clarence Weatherspoon in 1999. The game was tied, 93-93, before Miami's Udonis Haslem made a layup and a three-point play surrounding a 3-pointer by Damon Jones to open an eight-point cushion with 4:34 remaining. Boston, which lost its fourth straight game, pulled within 105-103 on a pair of free throws by Pierce with 1:05 left, and after a series of fruitless possessions, the Celtics got the ball back with 11.3 seconds left. Pierce, who collected 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists, drove the lane and was fouled by O'Neal but missed his first free throw, then sank the second to make it 105-104. Miami's Christian Laettner split a pair from the line with 3.1 seconds remaining before Boston's Ricky Davis misfired on a double-pump jumper from the left baseline just before the buzzer. Boston connected on 34-of-38 free throws while Miami sank just 21-of-31. Raef LaFrentz scored a season-high 21 points to pace the Celtics, who had five players record at least 14 points. "When we move the ball and share the wealth, we are a much more dangerous team to stop," Pierce said. "Everybody had a chance to contribute today and we had several players with double figures." Miami trailed at the break, 60-59, before opening the second half with 13 straight points. The Heat led by as much as 78-65 on a pair of free throws by Wade with 5:27 left in the third quarter and took an 85-77 advantage into the fourth quarter. But after Eddie Jones made it 87-77 on a jumper 15 seconds into the fourth, the Celtics went on a 9-0 run to make things interesting. "I think we have to pick it up a little more and do a little better," O'Neal said. "It's all about us. We have to dig down collectively to get things done. The more mistakes we make, the closer these games are going to be. We have to start putting things together. We're 10-5, doing OK, but we can do a whole lot better." "You enjoy the wins when they come like that and you hate the losses when they come like that," Wade said. "There is a fine line. This is a season in progress. Hopefully, when we have a 10-point lead, we can put the game away and have a comfortable victory."
