Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Bobby Simmons frustrated LeBron James all night, then took over himself in the fourth quarter. Simmons scored nine of his 17 points while not allowing James to make a basket in the final period as the Los Angeles Clippers won their fourth straight, a 94-82 decision over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers trailed for most of the game, but drew within 73-72 on a jumper by Eric Snow with 9:40 remaining. After a dunk by Elton Brand pushed the Clippers' lead back to three, Simmons scored six points in 70 seconds to give Los Angeles an 81-72 advantage with 7:41 on the clock. Simmons also grabbed 10 rebounds and played stifling defense on James, who had averaged 29.7 points in Cleveland's previous three games, but was held to 22 on 9-of-19 shooting in this one. "It's always a great matchup," Simmons said, "Guys should want to guard the best guy on the opposing team and that's what I wanted to do tonight." After recording just 13 starts in his first three seasons, Simmons has started every game for Los Angeles this season with Kerry Kittles and Corey Maggette injured. "He's gotten so much better in a year's time, its really amazing," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "I have a lot of respect for the work he put in to reach the level he's reaching right now." Most of James' production came in the third, when he scored 12 to cut Cleveland's deficit to 70-68, but managed just three shots in the fourth as the Cavs had their three-game winning streak snapped. "LeBron is a great player and he's going to be a guy who is going to make plays for his team," Simmons said. "So he kept me busy all night." "We just didn't execute," James said. "But we're still on a roll and we've won nine out of our last 11. We got back into the game in the third quarter." Brand scored 18 of his 30 in the first half as the Clippers shot 56 percent (22-of-39) and took a 52-41 lead into the break. "It's imperative against a team like this to get off to a good start," Brand said. "We wanted to come out with a lot of energy. I scored early so coach kept calling plays for me." Every time we lose, teams just jump on us right out of the gate so we have to buckle down in the first quarter," James said. Los Angeles cooled off in the third, however, shooting 25 percent (5-of-20) to let the Cavs get back in it. Marko Jaric had 16 points and 11 assists for Los Angeles (9-6), which is off to its best start since the 1992-93 season. "There's a lot of unity on this team and there's certainly a lot of excitement," Brand said. "It's always a great feat to win for your fans and play a solid game at the same time."
