Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- A newcomer made it seem like old times for the Detroit Pistons. Antonio McDyess scored his team's first 12 points as the Pistons rolled to a 93-72 triumph over the Houston Rockets, who have dropped four in a row. Signed as a free agent in the offseason, McDyess started in place of All-Star center Ben Wallace, who served the final game of his six-game suspension. He singlehandedly gave Detroit an early 8-0 lead and made seven of his first eight shots to stake the Pistons to a 19-10 advantage. "We wanted to punch it (inside)," Detroit guard Chauncey Billups said. "Dice was hot, so we wanted to run more things for him." "I haven't had an opportunity like that in so long. There's no feeling like that," said McDyess, a former All-Star who played just 52 games over the previous three seasons due to injuries. "(Coach Larry Brown) took me out and I lost my rhythm. I felt like I was shooting too much, rushing my shots in the second half." The 7-6 Yao Ming proved no match for the 6-9 McDyess, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. "I just used my quickness, tried to cut to the basket and get easy shots," McDyess said. "When he came out on me, I tried to drive, get him in foul trouble." Brown hinted he may leave McDyess in the starting lineup and bring Rasheed Wallace off the bench. But McDyess frowned on the experiment. "No, I wouldn't even feel right," he said. "Rasheed's a starter. You can't do that to him." In a season unsettled by the absences of Brown due to hip surgery and Ben Wallace due to his suspension, Detroit finally looked like the defending champions with its exquisite team play. "It felt like last year," said Billups, who had 18 points and eight assists. "That's the first time we've had fun all year." "We made a lot of extra passes, especially late in the clock," Brown said. "We haven't been doing that. We were making all the hustle plays. That's probably our best game all year." The Pistons never trailed but saw their lead shrink to 51-49 midway through the third quarter. But Richard Hamilton, who capped a 13-2 run in the first period, made a pair of free throws at the end of the third to give Detroit a 69-59 cushion. "You think it's going to be easy (after winning)," said Hamilton, who scored 19 points. "Everybody's telling you how great you are. You forget what got you there. It's an adjustment period." Houston, which has lost five straight home games, never climbed within single digits in the fourth quarter as Detroit got points from seven players in the final 12 minutes, including eight from Billups. Tayshaun Prince scored 11 points and Rasheed Wallace added 10 for the Pistons, who welcome back Ben Wallace on Friday at San Antonio. "It's beautiful," Billups said. "We're going to need his energy. He should be good and fresh." Jim Jackson scored 21 points for the Rockets, who committed 20 turnovers to the Pistons' eight. Yao added 19 and Tracy McGrady added 16. "Right now, our effort collectively is pitiful," Jackson said. "That's why we're losing games. The way we're playing now, it's embarrassing to watch." "I'm not going to sit here and pick apart each and every guy," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy added. "I think it starts with me. I'm going to get a group that looks like they really want to play. I just haven't provided that this year, and for that I'm very apologetic to our fans."
