Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The Memphis Grizzlies could not recover from a second-quarter shooting barrage by Stephon Marbury. Marbury scored 19 points of his 26 points in the second period to lead the New York Knicks to their sixth straight home win, a 90-82 victory over the slumping Grizzlies, who may be changing coaches again. The Grizzlies lost their fifth straight to fall to 5-11. They were one game under .500 following a close home win over San Antonio on November 22 but have dropped four games since the unexpected resignation of 71-year-old coach Hubie Brown on Thursday. "We know the stress of being on the road in the NBA gets to all of us, never mind a 71-year old man who was the fire and spirit of the team," Memphis forward Shane Battier said. "We were lucky to have him as long as we had him. He taught us a lot about being a professional." Memphis had suffered a tough five-point loss to Sacramento on Tuesday and got off to a good start in this one. The Grizzlies took a five-point lead into the second quarter and led for most of the period before Marbury and the Knicks woke up. "He's a great player and three of those threes were two two or three feet behind the 3-point line," Memphis interim coach Lionel Hollins said. "You hope he doesn't do those kind of things, but if he does you are not totally surprised by it because he is a great player." Marbury sank four 3-pointers in a span of just over two minutes to give the Knicks their first lead, 42-40, with 4:14 left in the first half. He shot 6-of-8 in the quarter, including 5-of-6 from the arc, to help New York open a 49-44 halftime lead. "I've been in situations where I got hot," said Marbury, who has made 43 percent (22-of-51) of his 3-pointers this season. "But tonight when you shoot from that far, you just let it go from wherever you're at." "He got into a rhythm and it was a nice zone to be in," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens added. "His shot looked good and he had good form. He hit big shots and it helped change the game." Marbury tied a team record with five 3-pointers in the second quarter, last done by Latrell Sprewell at Milwaukee on January 26, 2002. His big night also moved the Knicks (8-6) two games over .500 for the first time since December 8, 2001 and helped them overcome any lack of energy they may have had from playing a second straight night following a tough overtime win at Atlanta. "When Steph got hot, he picked up our whole team," New York guard Jamal Crawford said. "We feel really fortunate because we got here late last night and we were playing against a really dangerous team that plays a lot of guys." The Grizzlies never were able to get back into the contest in the second half. They were within four points with 2:22 to go in the third period, but Pau Gasol committed three quick fouls and the Knicks stretched the lead to 71-61 heading into the fourth. Riding a big night by their reserves, who outscored Memphis' bench, 33-28, the Knicks pulled away. They built their lead to 13 at the 8:02 mark following a three-point play by rookie Trevor Ariza and never let their advantage slip below eight the rest of the way. "After a back-to-back, you really need the help," Wilkens said. "They really stepped up big. The bench was really good for us tonight and we needed it. They brought some energy off the bench and that made a huge difference." Mike Sweetney and Nazr Mohammed scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Knicks, who have won six in a row at home for the first time since February 25-March 17, 2001. "We are playing good," said New York forward Kurt Thomas, the only remaining Knick on the active roster from the 2000-01 season. "We are really feeding off of each other. We are helping each other on the defensive end and sharing the ball on offense. That is all you can ask for." Bonzi Wells scored 16 points and Lorenzen Wright added 12 for the Grizzlies, who got just 11 from Gasol. Memphis, which won 50 games last season en route to its first playoff berth is expected to name Mike Fratello coach on Thursday according to a report by ESPN.com. "It's tough, but I don't think you can pinpoint that as the reason we have lost," Memphis forward Mike Miller said of the imminent coaching change. "We have had the opportunity to win games and we just haven't pulled them out."
