Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- For once, Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade did not have to carry the Miami Heat. Christian Laettner scored a season-high 23 points off the bench and Eddie Jones added 21 as the Heat coasted to a 105-81 victory over the Chicago Bulls. "It felt good to be moving out there full speed," who Laettner, who has been battling knee problems for the first time in his career. "I'm getting to a point where my body is feeling better. So, hopefully I'll keep playing with energy and be able to help the team." Laettner scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, including six in the final two minutes. He had a wide grin on his face when he converted a pass from O'Neal for a layup with 2:35 remaining. "I was just laughing at a pass Shaq made to me for an easy layup," he said. "It was fun to have success in the fourth quarter. I haven't been in that position in a long time, so it felt good." "Christian Laettner played inspired basketball," O'Neal added. Jones snapped out of a recent slump that had seen him shoot under 25 percent (7-of-31) in the previous four games. In Miami's 94-92 loss to Toronto on Tuesday, he was 0-for-4 with five turnovers in 29 minutes. O'Neal and Wade were limited to 18 and 15 points, respectively - nearly 13 below their combined average. But they got plenty of help as the Heat also received a season-high 10 points from Wesley Person. "I thought it was a great game for us and for a lot of reasons," Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We opened up our game with our defense by holding them to 31 points in the second half." Miami broke open the game with a pair of key runs in the second half to improve to 8-0 this season when scoring at least 100 points. "The coach wants us to be a more complete team, rather than just me and Dwyane doing our thing," O'Neal said. "We played excellent basketball tonight, period." Person's jumper capped an 11-4 spurt that gave the Heat a 74-64 lead with 3:12 left in the third quarter. Miami began the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run, building an 86-68 cushion on Person's layup with 9:12 remaining. The final score represented Miami's biggest lead. "Obviously, we were focusing on their premier players and we got burned by their bench guys," said Kirk Hinrich, who led the Bulls with 19 points. Rookie Chris Duhon added a season-high 15 for Chicago, which was held to 37.5 percent (33-of-88) shooting. The Bulls have been held under 44 percent in 12 of their first 13 games. "Our shooting was awful in the second half," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "You do not win many games taking fadeaway jump shots. Our defense was equally as bad as our offense." Chicago center Eddy Curry was poked in the left eye with 9:27 left in the second quarter and played sparingly thereafter.
