Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Chris Webber got off to a quick start against the shorthanded Indiana Pacers at ARCO Arena, where even full-strength teams from the Eastern Conference have had little chance. Webber made his first eight shots and scored 16 of his 29 points in the first quarter as the Sacramento Kings routed the Pacers, 113-87, improving to 47-2 at home vs. the East in the last four seasons. One of those two losses came to Indiana, which posted a 96-87 win on March 3, 2002. But with top scorers Jermaine O'Neal, Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson all serving long suspensions, a repeat performance was unlikely. "With our talent depleted the way it is, we have to execute on every end," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "Tonight, we didn't do that and they are a much better team, and it showed." Webber scored the Kings' final six points of the first period, sparking a 12-4 run that gave Sacramento a 36-22 lead. Brad Miller capped the spurt with a dunk with 9 1/2 minutes remaining in the half. Miller had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Kings, who held a 60-47 advantage at the break. Led by Miller's performance, the Kings held a 57-28 advantage on the boards and a 23-9 edge on the offensive glass. "We controlled the boards tonight," Miller said. "We haven't been able to say that all year." A former Pacer, Miller knew that Sacramento could not take Indiana lightly, despite the depleted roster. "There's no mercy in this league," Miller said. Jamaal Tinsley sparked a small Indiana surge in the second half. He made a 3-pointer at the start of the third and fed Austin Croshere for a dunk with 10:36 on the clock to draw the Pacers within 60-51. After a rare miss from Webber, who was 13-of-19 from the field, Tinsley and John Edwards missed consecutive layups before Doug Christie hit a 3-pointer on the other end to spark a 24-5 surge that sealed the victory. Tinsley scored 21 points and had six assists for Indiana, which dropped to 0-3 on its four-game road trip. "I can't think of one area that we performed well in tonight," said Croshere, who scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Before the game, Indiana activated Reggie Miller from the injured list. The veteran guard served his one-game suspension and will be in uniform Saturday when the Pacers face the Golden State Warriors. Sacramento improved to 7-0 when holding its opponents under 100 points.
