Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki didn't let up from his record-setting performance, but he did have help in keeping the Utah Jazz playing the blues. Nowitzki and Jason Terry each scored eight points in the fourth quarter to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 109-86 victory over the slumping Jazz. After scoring a franchise-record 53 points Thursday vs. Houston, Nowitzki scored 30 points, his 30-point game in his last four. The All-Star forward came into the game averaging an NBA-best 27.3 points. "I get a lot of shots with Mike (Michael Finley) out," Nowitzki said. Right now I'm just trying to be aggressive and seeing what it takes for us to win. My jumper is a lot better. I've got to find ways to be effective." "He going to have opportunities always to get us 25 to 30 points," Dallas reserve swingman Jerry Stackhouse said. "It's almost like if he doesn't have 25 or thirty points, we feel like he isn't doing something right." The game was close throughout until the Mavericks took control late in the third quarter. Leading 68-66, the Mavericks outscored the Jazz, 15-3, over the next four-plus minutes. Terry and Marquis Daniels each scored five points while Nowitzki added four as Dallas opened an 80-69 lead with 9:39 remaining. "They got whatever they wanted in the first quarter," Nowitzki said. We got things under control with our zone at the end of the third and kept the pressure up on them." "I was playing the tempo I wanted the game to be at," Terry said. "We've got point guards who can really run. Dirk can the floor and guys can get up and down." Terry scored 19 points and Stackhouse added 18, giving Dallas a 40-26 edge in bench points. "That's why they brought us here," Terry said. "If the game's not going quite the way we want it, it's our job to come in and create a tempo that will make us successful. We did that tonight." "The bench is always good for us," Nowitzki said. "We feel like we have one of the deepest teams in the league. They can come and score. We've got some athletes off the bench who can rebound and play defense." Even though his team had 25 assists and shot 51 percent (38-of-75), Sloan was very critical of his team's play. "I've never seen our team play as selfishly as we did tonight," Sloan said. It seemed like whoever got the ball was going to shoot it in a hurry before someone else got it. We had plenty of scorers out there, but not enough basketballs." Harpring scored 22 points and Carlos Arroyo added 16 for Utah, which has lost four straight and eight of 10 since a 6-1 start. "There are times when you're losing that you get exposed," Harpring said. "When you're winning, a lot of things are covered up and things are all good. When you're losing, even by a couple of points, its just a few plays here and there that make a difference." "Matt shot well tonight but we've got to get someone to play defense if we want to win games," Sloan said.
