Game StoryEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Eric Williams had the New Jersey Nets playing like Jason Kidd was in the lineup. Williams scored 21 points as the Nets cruised to a 109-88 victory over the hapless Atlanta Hawks, who have lost nine straight games. Without Kidd, its injured All-Star guard, New Jersey is averaging an NBA-worst 81.5 points and had not reach the century mark in regulation in any of its previous 15 contests. "We had a great mental and physical practice, and it carried over," Williams said. "We needed a win, even though we knew in the back of our heads that our man was coming back." Kidd practiced with the team Friday and is expected to make his season debut Monday against Toronto after recovering from offseason knee surgery. The Nets were never headed as Williams, who made 7-of-8 shots, scored six points in a 19-4 run that covered the game's first five minutes. Richard Jefferson and Travis Best, who scored 14 points apiece, combined for the other 13 points in the surge. New Jersey had a team season-high five players in double figures. "Jason coming back definitely gave us a shot in the arm," Jefferson said. "We always pass the ball and we're always unselfish. It's a matter of knocking down shots, and we've been having trouble doing that because guys are taking unexpected shots. We just posted up and dropped shots out of the double-team. Eric couldn't miss a shot from the corner." Atlanta closed to 25-22 before Rodney Buford scored five points in 19 seconds to give New Jersey a 30-22 lead at the end of the period. Buford scored a season-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting as the Nets shot a season-best 54 percent (37-of-68) from the field. The Nets have won two of three after a 2-11 start which including a nine-game losing streak of their own. Al Harrington scored 17 points and Antoine Walker added 15 for the Hawks. The two combined to shoot just 12-of-28 from the field. Hawks coach Mike Woodson questioned his team's effort and vowed to continue to make lineup adjustments. Before the opening tip, he inserted center Kevin Willis and guard Boris Diaw into the lineup in favor of usual starters Jason Collier and Delk. Hawks point guard Kenny Anderson and Delk are wondering why the team can't play like it does in practice. "There's a chemistry issue," Anderson said. "We have good practices, that's the thing. But we can't translate it into the games." "We have to carry it over and compete like we do in practice," Delk said. "Two struggling teams; we should have been in a dogfight from the first bucket."
