Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan took the San Antonio into previously uncharted territory. Duncan scored 20 points and led five players in double figures, helping the Spurs to their best start through 18 games with a 104-83 rout of the Milwaukee Bucks. San Antonio won its seventh straight game to improve to 15-3 for the first time, surpassing the previous franchise-best of 14-4 set in the 1999-2000 season. "We're a lot farther along than last year, but we've got a lot of growing to do still," Duncan said. "The fourth quarter yesterday is an example of the growing we still have to do." The Spurs nearly threw away a 21-point second-half lead before holding on for an 80-77 home victory over Detroit. What should have been an easy win became a draining one. "Tonight was a good win for us," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "Everyone has to do back-to-backs. It was an emotional game last night and a tough game. It was nice to see us have the juice we had tonight." The Spurs, who are holding opponents to 79 points per game during the streak, gradually pulled away in the second quarter. Manu Ginobili scored eight of his 12 points during a 14-4 run, putting San Antonio in front, 46-35. "We started slow, but turned things around," Ginobili said. "Defensively, we did a great job. We were getting the defensive rebounds and all the loose balls." The Spurs shot 74 percent (14-of-19) from the field in the third quarter, which was capped by a 3-pointer by Devin Brown that extended the lead to 80-60. "I thought our guys played hard, really competed pretty good," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "We just didn't do a good enough job defensively at times. They shot (74) percent in the third quarter and made everything." Brown, rookie Beno Udrih and Tony Parker scored 13 points apiece for the Spurs, who shot 57 percent (43-of-75) and won for the fourth time in five nights. "I'm getting familiar with the league," Udrih said. "That's helping a lot. Me and Devin know we're coming from the bench and we're going to get an opportunity to play." Brown has averaged 14.5 points off the bench over the last four games. "Our guys have been great off the bench," Duncan said. "They are ready to come in, all the guys, on any given night." Desmond Mason scored 18 points and Michael Redd added 15 for Milwaukee, which lost for the ninth time in 10 outings. "It's frustrating because we're a talented team," Milwaukee forward Joe Smith said. "We feel that we can get the job done. There are just one or two miscues down the stretch that hurt us. It's unfortunate, but I think we're ready and hopefully we can get things turned around." Forward Keith Van Horn sat out with tendinitis in his right ankle and is the latest Buck to miss playing time with medical issues. "We have some guys banged up and we need to get healthy bodies," Porter said. "We just don't have the numbers at times. San Antonio is a very deep team and they played extremely well. We just didn't have an answer for them tonight."
