Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- One night after celebrating his first win, Mike Fratello was lamenting his first loss. Fratello's Memphis Grizzlies were ambushed early and never recovered in a 96-91 loss to the Orlando Magic, who got 23 points from Grant Hill. Hired Thursday to replace former mentor Hubie Brown, Fratello got his first coaching win with the Grizzlies in Friday's home triumph over Philadelphia. On the road in the second of a back-to-back set, the coach saw a different team - especially with point guard Jason Williams sidelined with a sore right foot. The Grizzlies committed 23 turnovers and looked a bit unfamiliar with each other. "If you think about it, we've gone four games in five nights," Fratello said. "On the day we normally would have had off, we came in and practiced. So we've got to give them Sunday off and let them get their bodies back, legs back and get some energy again. Then get one day of practice in and then it's four of five nights again. "I know it's a big-picture thing and you want to get everybody on the same page and understand how we want to play. But you also want to have a chance to go out and win a game." The Grizzlies fell behind by 13 points late in the first quarter and by 19 near the end of the first half. They trailed by double digits until the final six minutes, when a half-hearted surge fell well short. Hill led five players in double figures for the Magic, who have won seven of their last nine games. Kelvin Cato had 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Hill scored nine points in the first and third quarters. In the second period, Cuttino Mobley capped a 20-7 burst by sandwiching 3-pointers around a layup by Mario Kasun, giving Orlando a 55-36 bulge with two minutes to go. Steve Francis and reserve Hedo Turkoglu scored 16 points each and Mobley added 11 for the Magic. "Those Houston guys (Mobley, Francis and Cato) can really go blue-collar on you," said Hill, who brought a hush over the crowd in the third quarter. He was driving to the basket and banged his left ankle, the same one that has sidelined him for all but 47 games the past three seasons and required four operations. He began to limp but quickly walked it off. "I like the drama," said Hill, who said he was bumped on the outside of his ankle. Pau Gasol scored 20 points and Stromile Swift had 16 for Memphis, which has lost six of its last seven games. "What would I change? First of all I'm trying to learn who the players are, what the team is about and get a feel for what I can do during the course of the game," Fratello said. "I didn't do a very good job tonight, particularly in the first half. I was very disappointed in me in the first half. "I'll try to get a better understanding so I'm making suggestions, calling better plays, making better substitutions. All of that will come. We've had one practice and two games."
