Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Gilbert Arenas carried the Washington Wizards for three quarters, keeping them close in a sloppy affair. Antawn Jamison did the work down the stretch. Arenas scored a season-high 34 points and Jamison scored seven of his 14 in the closing minutes as the surging Wizards rallied for a 95-88 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Despite shooting just 34 percent (14-of-41) from the floor in the first half and getting outrebounded, 50-34 overall, Washington has won four in a row for the first time since the 2002-03 season. "We aren't the old Wizards, we're the new Wizards," Arenas said. "We can't get compared to them. This is a new bunch, new faces, new talent, people who are young and they want to win. "When you have old veterans in here, they've done shut it down because earlier in their career, they had chances of winning championships and now they're on a bottom-feeder team; they don't want to play. But we have young talent that's trying to prove themselves in this league and they want to win." Arenas scored 30 points through three quarters, but Larry Hughes (12 points) was the only other Wizard in double figures and Washington trailed, 70-69. "Gilbert, when we needed it, took care of the game," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. Jamison, who left briefly before halftime after taking a hard elbow to the face and played with a two stitches in his cheek during the second half, put together a string of points when Washington needed it most. He scored seven points in a 4:27 span, spearheading a 15-4 run. His jumper with 4:39 remaining gave the Wizards an 81-79 lead, their first since the second quarter. "We knew we were coming," said Hughes, who tied his career high with seven steals and leads the NBA in that category. "Nobody panicked. We knew we weren't rebounding. I knew I wasn't making shots and Antawn wasn't making shots. That was their lead right there. We put in a couple shots, got a couple rebounds, and then we were in control. "Once it got tied, it was time for us to take over and pull away." Two minutes later, Brendan Haywood won a jump ball from Tyson Chandler, then got free under the hoop for a dunk that put Washington on top for good, 83-81. Jared Jeffries banked in a 3-pointer with 60 seconds left to make it 88-81 and Hughes hit six straight free throws to seal the win. The Bulls led, 58-47, midway through the third period when point guard Kirk Hinrich committed his fourth foul. Once he left the court, the Wizards scored nine straight points to pull within two. "What hurt us was Kirk picking up the two fouls in the third quarter," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "We had a nice little rhythm going and were playing pretty well when he picked up his fourth. When he went out, that's when we struggled. We stayed in the game because we played hard. I can't fault the guys' effort but playing smart sometimes has something to do with it, too." Chandler came off the bench to score 15 points and swipe 21 boards, one shy of his career high. Andres Nocioni, Eddy Curry and Hinrich also scored 15 each as the Bulls dropped their seventh straight at the MCI Center. Hinrich picked up his fifth foul with 10:17 remaining and fouled out with 38 seconds left. "It's frustrating," he said. "I've been in foul trouble a lot this year. I'm doing my best to try to stay in the game. I make one or two silly ones and one or two that I don't think are fouls at all. I have to eliminate the silly ones to stay in the game." Washington (10-5) is off to its best start since the 1974-75 season. The club has won four in a row at home. "Character and a willingness to hang in there, defending and rebounding," Jordan said were the keys to this victory. "At the start of the fourth quarter we knew if we rebounded the ball we would win the game. We really got out there and made the effort."
