Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- One day after his 19th birthday, Josh Smith may have come of age in the NBA. Smith scored inside off a miss by Al Harrington with 17 seconds remaining to help the Atlanta Hawks defeat the Philadelphia 76ers, 96-92, and end a nine-game losing streak. A rookie from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, Smith posted season highs with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and blocked a 3-pointer by Aaron McKie with 10 seconds remaining. "I saw (Kenny) Thomas driving and he swung it out to my man," Smith said. "I knew I had to get out there. I knew McKie sets up slow, so I had time to block the shot." "He's an excellent athlete," McKie said. "He got his hands on it. I thought I got a good look at it." Smith had just three points and one rebound through three quarters and Hawks coach Mike Woodson thought of pulling Smith from the rotation until he dunked the ball with 9 1/2 minutes remaining to give the Hawks a 77-76 lead. "I just knew we had to do something quick and we needed to bring some energy," Smith added. "I'm just trying to play hard whenever I get my minutes." "What can you say?" Woodson said. "A 19-year-old kid made a play like he's been in the league for a long time. Josh Smith has come a long way. I was about to pull him and then he dunked the ball. He turned out to be the player of the game." Harrington hit a jumper to put Atlanta on top, 91-90, with 1:23 left. After Atlanta's Antoine Walker made a free throw, Marc Jackson tied the contest at 92-92 with a 17-foot jumper with 40 seconds left. Atlanta's Peja Drobnjak also posted season highs with 20 points and nine rebounds. He scored eight consecutive points to help the Hawks bounce back from an 11-point deficit to take an 82-76 lead early in the fourth. Walker collected 22 points and 12 rebounds and Harrington scored 21 points as Atlanta won for the first time since beating the Houston Rockets on November 16. Philadelphia took a 27-26 lead into the second quarter thanks to Allen Iverson, who scored 18 points in the opening period on his way to a season-high 36. But Iverson, who started out 8-for-9 from the field, missed 15 of his last 19 final attempts and scored only six points in the final quarter. "Shots just weren't going down," Iverson said. "I got in a real good rhythm early and then I sat down and didn't have the same touch." Kyle Korver scored 14 points and Jackson added 13 for the 76ers, who have lost eight straight on the road and five in a row overall, their longest losing streak since January 2-12, 2003. "We've been having problems finishing games off," McKie said. "I think we get off to a good start against teams and we just start coasting and going through the motions. We have to learn to put teams away and we're not doing a good job of that."
