Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Shareef Abdur-Rahim made the Boston Celtics pay for their mental lapse. Abdur-Rahim hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer after the Celtics failed to get off a shot at the other end to lift the Portland Trail Blazers to an 89-87 victory. After Zach Randolph made a pair of free throws to draw Portland within 87-86 with 30 seconds remaining, Boston lost track of time and let the shot clock run out to set the stage for Abdur-Rahim's heroics. "(It was) very disheartening, because we played a great game," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "The one thing you have to do when the other team doesn't have a timeout is get the ball on the rim." "It's a learning process for all of us," Celtics guard Gary Payton said. "We go down and we were in the wrong place, and we didn't get the last shot off. "If the ball hits the rim, the clock is still running and they don't have a chance to set up a play and they'll try and throw up anything. It's a learning process. It's unfortunate we have to lose by doing it." Derek Anderson received the inbounds pass and got the ball to Abdur-Rahim, whose shot from the arc went through as time expired. "It wasn't a play really designed for anybody since we didn't have any timeouts," Abdur-Rahim said. "D.A. (Anderson) got in the lane a little bit and made (Paul) Pierce bite a little, kicked it to me and I just thank God for giving me the concentration and confidence to knock it down." "We needed to win a game like that," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "After we lost one like that in Toronto earlier and again in Boston, it was time for us to win a game like that." Darius Miles bruised his right heel on the final shot and had to be helped off the court. He is not expected to travel with the Blazers for their game at Utah on Friday. With 15 points and 14 rebounds, Abdur-Rahim was one of three Blazers to record a double-double. Randolph had 22 points and 17 boards and Theo Ratliff added 10 and 13 for Portland, which held a 62-39 advantage on the glass and won despite shooting just 35 percent (33-of-93). "It was all those rebounds that kept us in the game," Abdur-Rahim said. "But then again, if we hit our shots, we probably would have had the game in hand." In a back-and-forth contest in which neither team led by more than five points, the Celtics temporarily took control with a 6-0 run that gave them an 85-80 lead with 3 1/2 minutes to play. Boston, which shot 38 percent (34-of-88), made just one of its final five shots down the stretch, while Portland rallied. "We missed great shots all night," Rivers said. "We missed wide-open shots all night. I don't think they could have asked for better looks." Suffering from the flu, Paul Pierce - who beat the Blazers with a basket at the buzzer November 10 - scored just six points on 3-of-13 shooting for the Celtics, who fell to 0-3 on their five-game road trip. Payton scored seven of his 14 points in the first half and made a jumper at the buzzer to give Boston a 52-50 advantage at the break.
