Game StoryMEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Coming off their worst performance of the season, the Detroit Pistons probably thought it would be better with Rasheed Wallace back in the lineup. Memphis' Shane Battier made it worse. Battier hit four straight free throws and had a key rebound in the final 19 seconds as the Grizzlies edged Wallace and the Pistons, 72-68. "We were right there at there at the end, and we've let a number of games slip away in the last few minutes on just one or two plays," Battier said. "It's just a matter of stepping up and making a play, and tonight it was making some free throws." "The game came down to the fourth quarter with us missing free throws and giving second shots," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "They made free throws and the hustle plays." With Wallace sidelined by a sore hamstring, Detroit scored a season-low 72 points in Friday's home loss to Atlanta. Even with Wallace returning to collect 22 points and 10 rebounds, the Pistons did not get any better. "We're a grind-out defensive team," Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince said. "This is a typical night for us scoring 70 points. We just have to make the plays we need to win." After Richard Hamilton was whistled for grabbing Battier's jersey during a race for a loose ball, Battier, who had eight points and 10 rebounds, sank both free throws to snap a 68-68 tie with just 19 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Wallace had an open look at a 3-pointer from the corner, but front-rimmed a shot that Brown would later question. "I'm not crazy about taking a three when you're down two," Brown said. "But it was a great look. But when you're in the fourth quarter and you miss shots and make bad decisions, you don't have a lot of time to recover." With 12 seconds to go, Battier was fouled while getting the rebound and made both free throws to give the Grizzlies a 72-68 lead. Wallace missed again and Pau Gasol blocked his second attempt with five seconds left to seal the win. "We went cold," said Wallace, who had nine of Detroit's 15 fourth-quarter points. "I know I did some stuff to kill us down the stretch, but we've just got to correct it." Gasol scored 18 of his 20 points over the first three quarters as the Grizzlies led, 58-53, entering the final period. But the Pistons took the lead with a 10-0 run highlighted by eight points by Wallace. His back-to-back 3-pointers gave Detroit a 63-58 lead. Detroit did not score another basket over the next six-plus minutes and Memphis answered with its own 10-0 surge. "We were just executing at the end and coming up with big plays," Gasol said. "Our defense got some rebounds and made some free throws when we needed to, and that's how you win games." Richard Hamilton scored 18 points for Detroit, which shot just under 36 percent (26-of-73) for the second straight game.
