Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) - Darius Miles, Ruben Patterson and rookie Sebastian Telfair had plenty in reserve. The trio came off the bench to fuel surges in the second and fourth quarters that lifted the Portland Trail Blazers to a 98-88 victory over the slumping Utah Jazz. "It was the play of our bench that gave us the big lift tonight, Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Ruben, Darius, Sebastian and Joel (Przybilla) were all huge for us." Miles and Patterson scored 10 points each, giving Portland a 32-9 advantage in bench scoring. They were most effective with their energy on defense as they clogged passing lanes, created turnovers and got out in transition. "Those guys killed us," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They were terrific." "We're like Starsky and Hutch out there," Patterson said of himself and Miles. "We're always finding each other. When he's on a fast break, he's always finding me and I always know he's running. That makes us hard to defend when we get in the open court." The forwards got some help from Telfair and center Joel Przybilla in the fourth quarter, when reserves scored 15 of 28 points for the Trail Blazers. "This is the NBA and I'm a player now," said Telfair, who is seeing extending playing time with Nick Van Exel sidelined with a sore right hip. "I gotta make the most of the minutes. I don't think I'm doing anything special, I'm just doing what a hard-working player does." A dunk by Miles triggered an 11-2 run that broke open a one-point game. Patterson sank a pair of free throws before Przybilla threw in a banker that beat the shot clock and gave Portland an 82-72 lead with 7:02 to go. A jumper by Telfair was followed by a transition dunk and inside shot by Miles that made it 90-76 with 3:55 left. Utah got no closer than nine points thereafter. Randolph scored 23 points and Derek Anderson and Damon Stoudamire added 15 each for the Trail Blazers, who avenged Friday's overtime loss at Utah. Miles missed that game with a sore right heel. "It's important to have Darius out on the floor, even if he's not scoring for us," said Randolph, who has led Portland in scoring in 15 of the last 17 games. "With the energy that those guys give us, they can make a difference for us that doesn't always show in the stats." Raja Bell scored 21 points and Matt Harpring added 19 for the Jazz, who have lost seven of their last eight games. "Those guys bring a lot when they come into the game," Bell said. "The game gets quicker. If you're a competitor, you got to be up for the matchups. They were good tonight." Portland (10-9) embarks on a six-game road trip. "It was important to get this win back from them," Randolph said. "I think we can feel pretty good about this road trip with the way our bench is playing." With Portland trailing, 23-19, after one quarter, the trio of subs scored the first 11 points of the second period, helping Portland open a 50-42 halftime lead. "Ruben came in right off the bat and scored a couple of quick baskets," Sloan said. "Everybody knows he's active (but) we couldn't find him. And then Miles comes in, gets in the open court and we couldn't change ends of the court with him, either." Utah used an 11-0 surge to take a 62-61 lead with 4:03 left in the third quarter.
