Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- It took overtime, but the Indiana Pacers finally put one in the win column. Returning from injury, Jamaal Tinsley matched his season high with 29 points and the Pacers scored the first 10 of overtime en route to ending their seven-game losing streak with a 108-97 triumph over the Atlanta Hawks. Winless since an 82-77 victory over Charlotte on November 26, Indiana controlled the extra session as Fred Jones made four free throws during the opening spurt and Tinsley added five points in the final 1:06 to tie his best output of the season set November 23 against Boston. Indiana started this one with a 9-0 run fueled by four points from Reggie Miller. Jeff Foster added eight points in nine minutes as the Pacers ended the opening quarter with a 27-22 cushion. But the Hawks regrouped and held a 49-43 lead at the break before Tinsley - who missed the previous three games with a sprained right ankle - put on a display in the third quarter, scoring half his 14 points in the period during a 7-0 run that forged a 62-62 tie. During a 5:19 stretch of the third period, Tinsley provided all of Indiana's offense, scoring 14 straight points for the team. "I was getting in good places to make shots, teammates were setting good screens," Tinsley said. "The coaching staff just put the ball in my hands." "Jamaal has been out a week," Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's tough to sit out that long and come back and have your rhythm. In the second half, he quarterbacked our team. He made plays, passing the ball. He made shots, he got to the rim, he created and he was a huge part of the game." Atlanta built an 81-69 lead on Antoine Walker's jumper with 11:03 to go, but Jones led a 14-1 run with nine points to put Indiana ahead and Miller hit a 3-pointer with 2:11 remaining for a 91-89 edge. "Coach just called my number," said Jones, who scored 15 of his 21 points in the final 17 minutes. "We were at a point in the game where it wasn't going very well for us and I tried to give us a spark in the way that I can." Former Pacer Al Harrington sank a pair of late free throws and Jones missed a drive in the waning seconds, forcing overtime. Indiana stepped up its defensive assault on Atlanta late in the game and outscored the Hawks, 39-16, after Walker's basket early in the fourth quarter. "That's what it takes to win on the road and that's what it takes to win on a high level," said Michael Curry, who made his Pacers debut after being signed on Monday. "We wanted to make them work really hard and also, we didn't want them to get a lot of transition baskets. In the fourth quarter and overtime, that's more like the type of basketball we have to play." "They just spread the floor and went into a one-on-one game," added Walker, who had 17 points and nine rebounds. "It's very difficult to do. They went small on us and played four guards and just spread the floor. It was a good strategy, but we were still playing well enough that we should have won the game." Miller added 19 points and David Harrison 12 and 10 rebounds for the Pacers, who played without forward Austin Croshere due to a sprained left ankle. Reserve Tony Delk scored a season-high 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting for Atlanta, which has lost six straight to Indiana.
