Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Coach Lawrence Frank might want to consider having his New Jersey Nets do extra shooting drills during its next practice. The New York Knicks held the Nets without a basket for more than 15 minutes bridging the final two quarters en route to an ugly 87-79 victory, snapping a seven-game road losing streak in the series. Jamal Crawford scored 30 points and Kurt Thomas added 14 and 12 rebounds for New York, which beat the Nets for just the third time in their last 15 regular-season meetings. The Nets also swept the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs last season. The Nets opened a 62-58 advantage on a 3-pointer by Eric Williams with 6:04 left in the third quarter but did not make another basket until Jason Kidd nailed a jumper with 3:01 remaining in the fourth period, which pulled New Jersey within 79-69. "After the five-minute mark of third quarter things were going our way," Frank said. "Then we hit an offensive lull where we couldn't get a bucket. We got ourselves into a huge hole and couldn't come back." New Jersey made 10-of-20 shots in the first quarter but just 18-of-61 (just under 30 percent) thereafter, missing 17 in a row and committing 13 turnovers during its anemic second-half stretch. "We played good defense," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We covered each other real well. We kept pressure on the ball. I felt we got a lot of hand on the ball, too, and that made a difference." "You know it can be done, but you don't think it's going to happen," Thomas said. "But when guys are covering for each other and getting after it, anything can happen." Kidd sank a jumper and two 3-pointers in the final minute, but the Knicks put away the game by making 8-of-10 free throws in the last 51 seconds. "Both teams weren't making a lot of baskets for a while," Kidd said. "We had great opportunities, we just went colder a little bit longer than they did. But we had a chance to make shots at the end and couldn't do it." The Nets were just 9-for-23 in the third quarter and made only four baskets in the fourth, all by Kidd, who played 16 of his 21 minutes in the second half as he continues to recover from offseason knee surgery. "I felt good, but sitting 45 minutes - closer to an hour - before I got back into the game, it's tough," Kidd said. "I'm a little strapped for minutes, so I had to stay out the first half so I could play a lot in the second half." Nazr Mohammed anchored the stellar second-half defense for the Knicks, finishing with eight blocks, including seven after halftime. "Nazr's improved his whole game as the season goes on," Wilkens said. "He's put a lot of work in." Richard Jefferson collected 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for New Jersey but shot just 7-of-18. Williams chipped in 21 points for the Nets, who had not lost at home to the Knicks since February 2, 2001. Jason Collins grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds but was just 2-of-12 from the floor as the Nets lost for just the second time in six games. They are 3-2 since Kidd returned. New Jersey jumped out to an early 18-7 lead before Kidd went to the bench midway through the first quarter. New York dominated the rest of the first half while Kidd remained on the bench, engineering a 17-point turnaround.
