Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Allan Houston and the rest of the bench brought the New York Knicks all the way back. Houston capped a 19-point fourth-quarter comeback with a 3-pointer that forced overtime and the Knicks rode their reserves to an emotional 113-107 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. New York (12-11) got 42 points from its bench as it ended Philadelphia's three-game winning streak and remained atop the weak Atlantic Division. The 76ers (9-13) let one get away as they fell to 3-1 in overtime. The Knicks floundered for more than three quarters and trailed, 90-71, with less than 11 minutes to go. They got back in it with a 12-1 surge sparked by reserve forward Jerome Williams, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. "It's kind of hard to believe," Williams said. "You turn off that voice in your head that says that it can't be done and you got to fight through it." "All those guys came in and did a great job." guard Jamal Crawford said. "They lifted our team and changed the complexion of the game. They got things moving faster. They did a great job of getting stops and getting baskets." A basket and two free throws by Stephon Marbury, who scored 27 points, pulled the Knicks within 99-97 with 52 seconds left. They looked done after missing three jumpers on one possession and fouling Willie Green, who left the door open by making 1-of-2 free throws with 4.6 seconds to go. That was plenty of time for Houston, a former All-Star playing just his fifth game since returning from knee surgery. He took a quick inbounds pass from Williams and drilled a 3-pointer from the right corner, tying the game with 0.4 seconds left. "We set up a play where I came off of Steph," said Houston, who came off the bench to score 15 points. "It was just good execution on our part. That's the situtation that I love being in." "Allan is know for making the big shots, and he's been there before," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "He is a great offensive player. He make a huge difference when he's on the court and feeling good. We had him (fresh) at the end, and when he came back in he was big for us." Houston hit the shot over rookie Andre Iguodala, who got caught in a screen. "We knew that they had to go for a three," 76ers coach Jim O'Brien said. "We asked everybody to lock and trail. Andre just got screened off under the basket and allowed to much space." The Knicks never trailed in overtime, taking the lead for good at 107-104 on Williams' dunk and free throw with two minutes to play. Kurt Thomas sank four foul shots in the final 44 seconds to seal the win. "We didn't want to lose tonight," Marbury said. "I don't think that losing was anywhere near in our minds." Thomas had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Jamal Crawford scored 14 points for the Knicks, who silenced Allen Iverson during their comeback, holding the three-time scoring champion without a point over the last 12-plus minutes. Kenny Thomas scored a season-high 26 points but missed a pivotal free throw in overtime and Iverson added 24 for the Sixers, who fell to 0-2 against the Knicks. "We just collapsed. It's as simple as that," Iverson said. "They wanted it more than us. The bad thing about this whole game is, we did so many things right. It's going to be tough to rebound from this mentally, but we have to let this one go." Through three quarters, Philadelphia shot 54 percent and trailed for just 39 seconds. It finished at 48 percent (44-of-92).
