Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Bob Sura got the Houston Rockets off to an uncharacteristically quick start and they never looked back. Sura lit up his former team for 17 of his season-high 24 points in the first half as the Rockets closed their six-game homestand with a 100-83 triumph over the Golden State Warriors. After missing the first month of the season following back surgery, Sura proved to be the catalyst for the offense, making his first eight shots and producing season highs of nine assists and eight rebounds. "It's something I've tried to do since I've been back, get us some easy baskets," said Sura, whose previous season high was a mere eight points. Sura scored six points as the Rockets came out running, jumping to a 10-4 lead and never trailing. Houston, which reached the 100-point plateau for the first time in a regulation game, controlled the transition game from the start, outscoring Golden State on the fast break, 18-10. "We made some shots and had some transition opportunities we converted," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. Tracy McGrady had 27 points and nine rebounds and Yao Ming added 15 and 17 as Houston dominated Golden State on the glass, 56-41. McGrady credited Sura with improving the Rockets' transition game. "That's the way he plays when he's at his best and we're at our best," McGrady said. "He made the right plays. There's not so much attention around myself, which makes my game a lot easier and it makes it easier for team. "It's fun to play that way, when you get stops and transition baskets. That's how we played in Orlando the last four years. I'd rather be up-tempo, but it all depends on the flow of the game." Houston, which has led after one quarter in just 12 of its 22 games, had 5-1 record during its six-game stay at the Toyota Center. With Houston leading, 36-33, midway through the second quarter, Sura hit a runner to start a 9-0 run. McGrady capped the surge with a 3-pointer to give the Rockets a 45-33 lead at the 3:58 mark of the second quarter. For Sura, it was only his ninth game with Houston since being signed as a free agent in the offseason. "We have to keep in mind the guy just came off back surgery," said teammate Juwan Howard, who had 10 rebounds. "The first few weeks were like training camp for him. He helps us to win ballgames in so many ways. Our transition game was much better. We got the ball out and pushed it, instead of grinding it out half-court." "We like to do it, contrary to popular belief," said Van Gundy, who has a reputation for slowing the tempo. Jason Richardson scored 25 points and Speedy Claxton and Troy Murphy each added 11 for the Warriors, who shot just 33 percent (31-of-94) from the floor. "Houston had energy from the start, and we didn't play together as a team," Richardson said. "Sura is a really good player. He had a lot of adrenaline and you could tell he wanted to do his best against some of his old teammates." Mickael Pietrus started in place of Mike Dunleavy Jr., who was sidelined with a bruised left leg. The second-year pro scored just two points and was 0-of-6 from the floor in 22 minutes.
