Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Despite recovering from a terrible first quarter, the Los Angeles Clippers could not overcome the Memphis Grizzlies' hot 3-point shooting. Jason Williams scored 17 points with three 3-pointers and Mike Miller added 14 with four as the Grizzlies battled back for a 92-82 triumph over the slumping Clippers. "They shot the long ball real well and we didn't do a good job of defending Jason Williams," Los Angeles coach Mike Dunleavy said. "He made 3's all night long." Williams, who was on the injured list with a sprained right ankle, has been outstanding in the three games since his return, including a season-high 27-point performance in an 89-86 triumph over the New Jersey Nets on Friday. "Without practicing very much because he was on the injured list for the last five games, I was concerned just how much he could do," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said. "Last game he was huge for us. Now he comes back and hits big shots for us when we needed it at the end." Pau Gasol had 20 points and nine rebounds for Memphis, which kicked off a four-game road trip with its sixth straight victory over the Clippers. "We were a little down in the third quarter after we let them back in the game," Gasol said. "But it was good at the end of the game. We were playing tough, we were executing and we were able to get a win, especially on this road." The Clippers overcame an early 15-point deficit and took their largest lead, 77-72, on Elton Brand's short jumper with 7:54 remaining. Memphis responded with a decisive 13-2 run over the next four-plus minutes, taking an 85-79 lead. Williams, who scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, hit a 3-pointer with 6:30 to go to start the run and Gasol followed with four straight free throws to give the Grizzlies the lead for good, 79-77. "Jason played well," Miller said. "Jason makes big shots, Jason makes big plays, and tonight he did that." Just under four minutes later, Williams buried a 3-pointer and, after another basket by Brand, Miller hit his fourth 3-pointer - 500th of his career - to cap the run for Memphis, which shot 56 percent (9-of-16) from the arc. "We starting guarding the pick and roll better," Miller said. "Anytime we got stops, we got out and ran and made some shots. We played better defense. Anytime you let your defense dictate your offense, you're going to be a lot better basketball team." Williams scored four straight points in the final 21 seconds to clinch the win. "Jason has been shooting well," Grizzlies teammate Bonzi Wells said. "The other night against New Jersey he shot lights out. He's just been playing well since he got off the IR." Corey Maggette had a game-high 22 points for the Clippers, (11-12), who have dropped five straight. Elton Brand chipped in with 19 points and 12 boards. "We just didn't do stuff right at the end," said Maggette, who committed three turnovers in the final minute. "We made such a tremendous effort to get back in the game, and then we messed it up towards the end. We never should have gotten down by that much to begin with. That's the key. "We weren't playing well in the first quarter and they jumped on us. We need to regroup and get back to the way we used to play." Miller and James Posey each hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter and Memphis shot 67 percent (14-of-21) to jump out to a 33-21 lead. In the second quarter, the Grizzlies extended the lead to 37-22 on a basket by Earl Watson before the Clippers answered with a 17-3 outburst over the next nine-plus minutes. Mikki Moore and Brand each scored five points during the run, reducing Los Angeles' deficit to 40-39. Maggette scored 17 points in the first half, but Gasol had four of the final six points as Memphis led 46-39 at the break. "Obviously the problem was Corey Maggette since he had 17 points in the first half, and 15 in the first quarter, which is a handful" Fratello said. "The key to his scoring is that he kept getting to the foul line and it was a point that we made to stop him since he was averaging 14 free throw attempts in the last six or seven games." Bobby Simmons, who was held scoreless in the first half, scored 13 consecutive points for the Clippers in the third quarter and Brand added six as they battled to a 68-68 tie entering the final period quarter.
