Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Vince Carter's debut with the New Jersey Nets had a promising start but a miserable finish. Richard Hamilton scored five of his season-high 37 points in overtime as the Detroit Pistons posted a 100-90 victory over the Nets, ruining Carter's debut with his new team. "We're definitely playing well as a team," Hamilton said. "The last two games, the coaches have definitely given us a lot more freedom on offense, other than just coming down running sets the whole time. Trying to get the ball up the court, trying to swing and making the game simple on offense. I think that enabled me to just go out and play my game." The Pistons (14-12) improved to 4-0 in overtime. Carter, who was acquired from Toronto on December 17 but had not played because of an Achilles injury suffered here nine days prior, scored 23 points in a whopping 42 minutes off the bench but suffered a severe cramp in his left hamstring with 2:13 left in overtime. After lying on the ground in front of the scorer's table for several minutes, Carter was carried to New Jersey's bench, where he received treatment on his leg. He eventually limped into the locker room with the game still being played. "I wasn't worried," Carter said. "I knew what it was right from the beginning. I think I just didn't get enough fluids. This Gatorade is going to be my friend. It had nothing to do with my Achilles. If that hadn't been fine, I wouldn't have been out there." The Pistons trailed, 89-87, before Hamilton made a jumper with 3:46 left in the extra session that triggered a 9-0 run. Rasheed Wallace, who had four points during the burst, gave Detroit the lead for good, 91-89, on a baseline jumper with 3:13 to play. Tayshaun Prince collected 18 points, nine rebounds and tied a career high with seven assists for Detroit, which has won 17 of its last 19 home meetings with the Nets. "That's the best all-around game I've seen Tayshaun play since I've been here," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. Ben Wallace got 17 of his season-high 18 rebounds in the second half. He also had four blocked shots, as did Prince, Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess. "This is the first time in my life I've been on a team where four guys had four blocks," Brown said. "I can't ever remember that happening." The 16 blocks are the most by the Pistons since 1982. After New Jersey rookie Nenad Krstic split a pair of free throws to tie the game, 87-87, with 19 seconds left, the Pistons called timeout. Chauncey Billups milked most of the clock before passing to Hamilton, who dished to Wallace in the left corner. But the power forward missed a shot from the arc just before the buzzer, sending the game into overtime. Richard Jefferson scored 27 points but made just 7-of-23 shots for the Nets (9-17), who connected on just 36 percent overall (31-of-87). New Jersey held an 84-76 lead after a jumper by Jason Collins with 3:31 remaining but gave up nine straight points. "As a team, we weren't able to get the job done at the end," New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank said. "In the second half, the Pistons controlled the boards. Obviously, they were a presence with their blocks and we had some turnovers down the stretch, but you have to give Detroit credit that they were able to pull it out."
