Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Rashard Lewis and the Seattle SuperSonics began a difficult five-game stretch with a hard-fought victory. Lewis scored 22 points as the SuperSonics snapped an eight-game losing streak at the Delta Center with a 98-88 triumph over the Utah Jazz. Ray Allen added 19 points for Seattle, which was beginning a stretch of four games in five days. The Sonics, who improved to 20-5 this season, had not won here since posting a 104-96 victory on February 1, 2000. "We haven't won here in a long time," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "I thought we did a good job of keeping the poise tonight." The Sonics held just a 73-72 edge entering the fourth quarter, but Allen began the period with a dunk and Ronald Murray sank a pair of free throws to open a five-point cushion. Seattle led by at least three points thereafter. "Whenever we had things going our way, I thought we just kind of fell apart," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We couldn't sustain any energy to continue to do what we wanted to do. ... We were really lost with what we were trying to do." The Sonics opened a 91-79 advantage on a pair of free throws by Danny Fortson with 4 1/2 minutes left, and after Utah scored six straight points, Murray and Vladimir Radmanovic each sank a pair of free throws to make it 95-85 with 53 seconds to play. Matt Harpring scored 22 points to pace the Jazz, who are 3-11 since losing star forward Andrei Kirilenko to a knee injury. "It's real difficult to play against teams with this kind of athleticism," Jazz guard Kirk Snyder said. "Andrei and Lewis are the same size and same position, so that's a big problem with him out." With Kirilenko not there to get his hand in Lewis' face, the Seattle forward connected on 4-of-7 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. "Kirilenko is so long, he creates all sorts of problems," Allen said. "Rashard took advantage of him not being there tonight." Utah held a 66-58 lead in the third quarter but could not sustain it against Seattle's zone defense. "I thought we were playing slow," McMillan said. "We were playing at their tempo. We allowed it to become a halfcourt game." "They changed defenses on us and it took us a while to figure out what was going on," said Jazz guard Raja Bell, who scored 16 points. "We didn't execute well against it. It was tough." Utah also was sloppy with the ball, committing 26 turnovers. Seattle had just 15 giveaways. Carlos Boozer had a big game inside for the Jazz, scoring 16 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, but he committed eight turnovers. "We just didn't take care of the ball," Bell said. "That's mental errors - costs you ballgames."
