Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- A recent string of success on the road inspired the Dallas Mavericks to step up their game at home. Dirk Nowitzki scored 29 points and gathered 11 rebounds as the Mavericks cruised to their sixth win in eight games, a 113-94 triumph over the Boston Celtics. After completing a 2-1 road trip and winning five of their last six overall away from home, the Mavericks looked to improve on a mediocre 8-6 record at American Airlines Center. Nowitzki and Erick Dampier gave Dallas control of this one early, scoring 11 and 12 points, respectively, in the first quarter to stake the Mavericks to a 41-20 lead. "We got stops, we rebounded, we really pushed the ball. We got the ball in the open court," Nowitzki said. "That's where we want to be the whole season. We haven't really been taking advantage of that." Celtics coach Doc Rivers took most of the blame for allowing the Mavericks to jump out to their big lead. "I really screwed them up," said Rivers. "We worked all day on the pick-and-roll coverage that we are going to play all the time. Right before the game, I decided to changed the pick-and-roll coverage. I thought it threw the team into a flux. They didn't have any confidence in the pick-and-roll defense. I take the blame for that. It was a gamble, a bad gamble." "We had trouble with our pick-and-roll defense," Boston guard Paul Pierce added. "They really put you in a bind with Dirk Nowitzki at forward because he's really like a guard, moving well with out the ball and shooting the ball from anywhere on the court." By the break, Dallas built a 73-49 advantage, with four players reaching the double-digit mark in points. "We played some of the best Mavericks basketball that I have seen all season in the first half," Dallas assistant Avery Johnson said. "A lot of the things that we had been working on in practice and watching in film sessions finally clicked for us in the first." "I thought tonight we came out with a lot of energy, a lot of effort, we made shots and played good defense," Dallas' Jerry Stackhouse said. "We forced some turnovers and got some easy opportunities. That's how we were able to get a big lead." Stackhouse, who scored 14 points off the bench for Dallas, sang the national anthem before the game and was ejected in the fourth quarter after receiving his second technical foul. Dallas' Shawn Bradley and Boston's Ricky Davis also were ejected after separate incidents in the final period. The Celtics used a 17-2 run in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 84-73. Pierce, Raef LaFrentz, Jiri Welsch and Gary Payton scored four points apiece during the spurt. "It took about two possessions (in the first quarter) to figure out what we were doing, and they went to work," LaFrentz said. "We made adjustments and made a run in the second half, cutting it to about 12. We'll come back against you, but (Michael) Finley got a little hot, and that was it." Finley scored 21 points, Dampier added 16 and Jason Terry had nine and 14 assists for the Mavericks, who rolled to just their second win in five home games but have won eight of their last nine meetings with the Celtics. "Our offense got in the lane," Terry said. "Guys were spotting up real well. When Damp comes out aggressive like that, we're really hard to stop. It's something that we really have to focus on." Welsch and Pierce each scored 17 points for Boston, which has lost three of its last four contests.
