Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- With their high-scoring trio on the same page, the Los Angeles Clippers rebounded nicely at home. Elton Brand scored 23 points and Corey Maggette and Bobby Simmons chipped in 22 apiece as the Clippers rolled to a 101-90 victory over the Utah Jazz. It marked the fourth time this season the three standouts scored at least 20 points, but the first time in which Los Angeles got a win. The Clippers snapped a three-game losing streak vs. the Jazz and won for just the third time in the last 24 meetings between the teams. "Defense really turned it around," Brand said. "And we had a lot of open looks. We had no turnovers in the third quarter and we didn't beat ourselves." Brand, Maggette and Simmons were a combined 8-of-33 with 33 points in a 96-76 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday, Los Angeles' worst offensive showing this season. After a slow start in this one, they got the Clippers rolling just before the half. "I wish we were trying to do that," Maggette said of the 20-plus output by him and his two teammates. "I don't really know what it is. It is something weird. Sometimes someone just doesn't hit shots, but tonight we had great contributions from the whole ballclub." Maggette broke out of a mild slump with his performance Wednesday. "Sometimes you go through stretches where you don't shoot the ball well," said Maggette, who was 17-of-46 in his last five games. "But I am always confident in what I am doing each night. I go out and play the best I can each night. I get banged up but that's part of the game." Brand scored five points, Maggette added four and Simmons one in a 10-0 run late in the second quarter that erased a three-point deficit. The surge helped Los Angeles take a 49-46 halftime lead and Utah never got any closer. "It was pretty balanced scoring," Simmons said. "Elton gave us some low post presence, Corey made plays around the basket and I was making shots tonight." The trio combined to score Los Angeles' first 13 points of the second half as it opened a 62-52 advantage. "Everyone was on the same page going into the third quarter," Simmons said. "As far as executing our offense and playing good defense we always try too." Carlos Boozer scored 23 points but no other player had more than 12 for the Jazz, who have lost 12 of 15. Utah failed to record a steal for the second time in franchise history. Rookie Kirk Snyder made his first career start and scored 11 points in 30 minutes of play. "It was just like playing basketball after I got the swing of things in the first few minutes," Snyder said. "I felt kind of good. It's a learning experience for me. My roll is to get it going defensively and shut guys down. I just have to be more aggressive." Utah coach Jerry Sloan was concerned with his team's defensive performance Wednesday night. "We couldn't stop them when we had to," Sloan said. "We had a difficult time trying to get up and play them. Whatever defense we tried to run, if we tried to run a zone we couldn't handle them a time or two. We tried man-to-man and we had a tough time with it. "If there was one thing that hurt us, it is we let them get on top of the basket too easy right when they needed to. Those are the things the guys are going to have to stop to have a chance to win."
