Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan and Tony Parker have the San Antonio Spurs firing on all cylinders as the year winds down. Duncan collected 19 points and nine rebounds, while Parker added 18 points to lead the Spurs to an easy 114-80 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The two combined to score 11 points as San Antonio raced to a 17-2 lead. Winners of eight of their last nine, the Spurs never trailed in the contest, despite playing without Manu Ginobili, who missed the game with a stiff neck. "I thought it was one of our best games of the season," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We're not this good and Portland isn't that bad. That's just what happens when somebody is playing good and somebody isn't." The Trail Blazers cut it to 25-20 with 10:53 to go in the second quarter on a dunk by Darius Miles, who finished with 17 points. But Parker and Brent Barry combined for 14 points in a 32-12 charge over the next 9:42. "They made that push to get back into it and we hit a little lull," Parker said. "I just wanted to get back to being aggressive and try to help my team win." The lead reached 24 midway through the third quarter and Portland seemed to have no answer for the Spurs, who have won seven in a row against the Blazers. "I don't have a whole lot to say," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "They kicked us from start to finish. It was my worst game since I've been here." Barry filled in nicely for the injured Ginobili, scoring 15 points as San Antonio shot 54 percent (47-of-87). "It's been a while since I had a chance to play and it just felt good to be out there," Barry said. "It's nice that Pop has the confidence to play me but it's also nice to remind some of my teammates and staff that I'm capable of contributing. It's probably even nicer to remind myself." Duncan played only 32 minutes and is averaging a career-low 34.8 minutes, but that hasn't prevented the Spurs from closing 2004 with a franchise-best 24-6 start. "We're definitely trying to reduce his minutes," Popovich said. "We want to make sure we don't overplay him right now. We hope that will end up being the smart thing at the end of the season, we'll see." "Coach knows what he's doing," Duncan said. "Honestly, I appreciate it. Knowing I played all summer, I know it's going to catch up to me. With the kind of team play we've had, there's been opportunities for rest. It's nice." Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 14 in his first game back after missing the last five contests with a hyperextended right elbow for the Blazers, who suffered their worst loss of the season. "It was nice to get back in there, but it was just a terrible game for us tonight," Abdur-Rahim said. "When you get down 17-2, it's tough to come back, especially against San Antonio."
