Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Strong second-half efforts by Peja Stojakovic and Chris Webber helped the Sacramento Kings continue their dominance at the Delta Center. Webber scored 14 of his 25 points in the third quarter and Stojakovic added 13 of his 26 in the fourth as the Kings posted their ninth straight win at Utah, a 109-102 victory over the Jazz. "We knew they were going to play hard. They always play hard, they always come at us," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "Fortunately, we got to the free-throw line and made some plays that we needed to make to give us a lead that we held on to in the fourth quarter. This is a big win for us." Unbeaten at the Delta Center since April 19, 2000, Sacramento struggled in the first half as Carlos Boozer scored 17 points for Utah to forge a 53-53 tie at the break, despite allowing Brad Miller to score the last five points of a 9-0 run midway through the second quarter. But Webber took over in the third, scoring 10 straight points for the Kings in a 2:36 span late in the period to build a 76-68 lead. Webber was 7-of-8 from the floor in the third after hitting just two of his first nine shots. "I got really pumped up right at halftime after I got into a little pushing session with (Matt) Harpring," Webber said. "That and the physicality, that really got me going." "He really got it going with his jumper. He made some big plays," Adelman said. "He kept us ahead, just kept us going. That was a huge lift for us." The Jazz shot 58 percent (22-of-38) from the floor in the first half but could not handle Webber and the Kings in the third. After a 9-0 run by Sacramento in which Doug Christie scored five points for a 66-58 advantage, Utah pulled within six points late in the period. But the Kings came right back, going on yet another 9-0 spurt to take a comfortable 85-70 lead. "When you play a team like this, they're going to pick you apart and take the easy baskets that you give them an opportunity to get," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "When you lose your concentration, for whatever reason, we give guys layups and it just breaks your heart. "And after that happened, we felt like we had to try to outscore them rather than try to make stops. When you play that way, you shoot the ball totally different." With Sacramento ahead 91-83 with 6:20 to go in the fourth, Stojakovic duplicated Webber's feat by scoring the Kings' next 10 points for a 101-91 cushion with 3:44 remaining. He hit three 3-pointers in the fourth, including an off-balance shot off the glass that gave the Kings a 106-94 lead with 2:43 to play. "We just really tried to stay in the game," Stojakovic said. "They outplayed us in the first half on both sides of the floor. I think we did a good job in the second half. In the third quarter, we had enough patience on the offensive end to move the ball and find open guys and make those shots." Miller had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Bibby added 17 and nine assists for Sacramento, which has won seven of its last eight overall on the road. Boozer had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Keith McLeod 14 and 11 assists and Harpring 13 and 10 boards for the Jazz, who have dropped seven of their last eight games, including four straight. Boozer's double-double was his 16th of the season. Despite another closely contested game, the Jazz could not halt their home woes against the Kings. Sacramento has beaten Utah in 10 of the last 12 meetings, including the playoffs. "I think our style is just beating their style, for whatever reason, I don't know," Webber said. "Maybe it's because our first taste of the playoffs we had as a team, they sent that away. And we'll always remember that. But they're a good team. You always have to respect a Utah team, no matter who they have."
