Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic played like a team at the end of a demanding stretch, not one that was kicking one off. Eddy Curry scored 20 points and Kirk Hinrich added 18 as the Chicago Bulls rolled to a huge early lead and pasted the Magic, 105-90. Rookies Ben Gordon and Luol Deng chipped in 16 and 15 respectively as Chicago (10-17) snapped a two-game slide. Bulls coach Scott Skiles had asked Deng and Chris Duhon - another rookie - to step up their play following a loss to New Jersey on Tuesday. The game was tied, 13-13, with 6:57 to go in the opening quarter when a dunk by Curry ignited a 10-0 spurt. Antonio Davis also had a dunk, Duhon buried a 3-pointer and Tyson Chandler a layup before Andres Nocioni, another rookie, capped the run with a free throw. Orlando was within 28-21 with two minutes remaining when Chicago closed the quarter with five straight points. Curry had a free throw and jumper and Nocioni added two free throws. Chicago shot 57 percent (12-of-21) over the opening 12 minutes and held Orlando to 36 percent (8-of-22). Any hopes the Magic had of getting back in the game evaporated early in the second quarter as the Bulls opened the period with a 13-5 burst. Hinrich had five points and Nocioni four in that run. "It was a great game for us, I think we just got off to a great start and they seemed a bit drained," Hinrich said. "So we just kept the energy up, all the guys stepped up, it's what we needed." Orlando trailed by 25 late in the opening half and were down 60-37 at the break. The Magic were outrebounded 27-14, missed seven of 17 free throws and committed 11 turnovers in the opening 24 minutes. "We wanted to come out with a lot of energy," Curry said. "We knew they were a good offensive team, but if we played good defense we could make something happen." They never got closer than the final margin in the second half and trailed by as many as 33 in the opening minutes of the third quarter. "The Bulls played aggressive," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. "We started out with energy and didn't maintain it. We didn't play a good game at all, in all phases." Grant Hill led the Magic with 16 points and Steve Francis added 12 but made just 3-of-12 shots. Orlando has lost four of its last five meetings with the Bulls after winning 16 of the previous 18 meetings between the teams. "It was tough," Francis said. "We just got our (tails) kicked. There is nothing more you can say. We didn't play hard at all, and that starts with the starters." Orlando, which last played Wednesday, kicked off a stretch of five games in eight days.
